Book recommendations
« on: November 26, 2007, 06:44:00 PM »
Hi gang,

I'm looking for a recommendation on a shooting technique book.  Here are the wants:

1) Emphasis on instinctive aiming (rather than gap method, etc.)
2) Useful for an experienced but mediocre shooter-that's-never-had-any-formal-coaching-but-used-to-shoot-pretty-good-when-he-was-a-kid-and-just-picked-it-up-again (me) to get off this stinkin' plateau and improve consistency
3) Useful to a newbie like my wife and (in the near future) my children to learn the basics
4) Shooting self/longbows mostly and recurves a bit.

Pretty much only want to buy one book if I can get away with it!  I know there are several, if not many, good ones out there, but would like some guidance sifting through the options.

Thanks for the input.

jay kidwell's "instinctive shooting" revised edition.  its all you need.  also become the arrow by byron ferguson is good.  it mixes a bit of gap shooting with a bit of instinctive shooting and alot of his personal style.  both are good reads

Would getting DVD's be more beneficial than a book?  Typically I'm more of a book kinda guy, but...

dvds in my opinion are much easier to understand.   reading something is one thing but to see it is another.  both books are good but a dvd makes it "come to life" so to speak.  hope this helps!

I just picked up Brian J Sorrells,Beginners Guide To Traditional Archery. It seems to fit your want list.

Heres a link to get at a good price

Just because it don't work for you, don't mean it don't.

Reading through your list, I think Brian Sorrells book will be the best choice for you.

However, put Kidwells book second on your list for when you decide to take the next step or encounter problems.

Get the Masters of the barebow DVD's and look at Asbell's book on instinctive shooting. Also Furgeson's book.

Books are excellent to learn from, but sometimes actually seeing the written stuff performed on a DVD/Video helps things fall into place.
I have Byron Fergusons "become the arrow", but when I obtained it on DVD and saw him demonstrating his technique, it made much more sense.
I also have two books by G.F. Asbell they are also really good, but the only place that the DVDs are available that I have found is on your side of the pond.

Books:
Recurve shooter = G.F. Asbell
Longbow shooter = B. Ferguson
Any trad bow = Kidwell
I've read them and recommend them all. But, from what the other guys have said, think I'll order some DVD's.  Best of luck.

I've had Kidwells book for about a year now. I've still not set down and read it all. But it has helped me greatly with Target Panic, and the section on target panic is really all I've read.

I just happened to begin reading it again today. It has lots of great info I believe I can apply to my shooting. Maybe it would help you too.

Now if I could just get time to shoot some.............
