Interesting way of quieting the bow!!
« on: January 29, 2008, 11:15:00 AM »
At the recent KZoo expo, the owner and maker of Palmer bows gave a speech on fine tuning the recurve and quieting it as well. The pointers he gave for fine tuning were really great, but the interesting point that he brought up that I had never thought about was a way to quiet the bow. He said to dip the ends of the string (the hard part on both ends) into a laquear that would take the wax off of these parts. The was on the string is what makes the loud sound when shooting a bow, and when taking the wax out it will quiet down the bow extremely. I asked him about using mole skin on the bowstring groves but he said over time the wax will build up on this as well.

Thought this was an interesting and very useful tip that I would pass along to the gang.

Good tip

Thanks

But wouldn't you want to have wax on the string, even in that area?

He said that there is no need for wax on the sting there. If it is wound like it should be then it will stay tight and will not fall apart, I thought the same thing also.

I wax mine heavy. It gives the deer a fighting chance. LOL.

Seriously though, I do wax mine heavy then wrap the string in heavy weight yarn starting at the loops and working my way down about 7-9"(just an inch past where the string touches the limb). A little tip I got from Kelly at Foxfire archery.

I will also use the string groove silencers in conjunction with the yarn sometimes. Only lost about 2fps this way but it sure makes em quiet! God Bless, DAVE

I can't really see where it will make much of a difference. But if you like it, go for it.

The wax is what causes the sound when the string contacts the limbs,,, without the excessive wax build-up the string is very soft and pliable. I soaked a string in denatured alcohol a whiles back and man I could tell the difference right away. Never had the Cajones to string a bow up with it though. The alcohol isn't supposed to hurt the material but,,,

I guess I'll try it one day.

Sounds interesting, I use Bow Hush on both my recurves and works great.  I have a spare string, might give that a try.

In Bob Lee's tuning video that comes with their bows they tell you to do the same thing.  It works great and keeps the extra stuff like mole skin or yarn off your sting or limbs.
