Longbow to recurve
« on: February 04, 2008, 12:20:00 PM »
Just bought my first recurve(Bear Super Mag 48 #55) after shooting longbow for years. My question is this I was able to pick up the recurve and shot "good" groups relatively quickly, but I am concerned about losing accuracy with my longbow is there any way to train to be profcient in both on a constant basis? I usually shot about 100 arrows a night.

I shoot both on a regular basis Capt, and found no difference in either.  Twelve years ago I went for four years shooting longbows only.  When I went back to shooting recurves, I found that I preferred the easier to shoot recurves for accuracy and consistency.  I shoot both now and get the same accuracy and consistency out of both.  I shoot one one day, the other the next day.  Recurves seem to be smoother at 28inches of draw pound for pound in my opinion.  So I shoot a longbow set up a couple pounds less than a recurve at my draw length of 28.5inches.  Try shooting one today and the other tomorrow.  If your grips are different, the bows feel weird swithching.  Once you get comfortable with the weight and draw, your accuracy will come and you won't notice a difference.  The key word is comfortable: the bow arm must feel solid, the hook must feel deep, and the drawing arm must be aligned with the arrow, and you must have back tension.  The "comfort" feeling sets in when you do all this and the arrow hits where you wanted it to.  That is your only affirmation that the whole shooting process went smooth.  Consistency is when the other arrows hit where the first one went.  Today, I am shooting a recurve.  I shoot at dimlight to work on my form for consistency.  I shoot with daylight at different yardages from 10 to 40 yards to work on my accuracy.

I also shoot both.
I started shooting recurves and did so for about 25 years before I ever shot a longbow.
When I first got a longbow (Jerry Hill Wildcat)I didn't really like it but I'd already decided I was going to get good with it,so I just stuck at it.It took about 6 months before I was happy with it,and I've been happy to switch from one to the other since then.
I do still find the recurve a bit easier to shoot, the longbow is a little more work for me,but it's very much worth it.
The funny thing is,when I look back at when I first started shooting,it was also around 6 months before I was getting it with the recurve.
All I can really say is,Don't expect it to work overnight, but you will get there.
Cheers.

Thank you for your responses. I think the big thing to get used to will be the different grips, and the physical size of the bows.
