Need help for a home target
« on: February 19, 2008, 09:17:00 PM »
I'm really getting frustrated.  All my arrows are getting bent (I switched to alumiminum arrows because I was breaking too many wood ones) so I'm down to 4 straight usable arrows and I'm afraid to shoot until I figure out what to do.    :(

I have an arrow cube target from Wally World (styrofoam) and its not the problem; the problem is what to set it on.  I tried strapping it to a picnic table in my yard but it would tip over (breaking arrows).  Then I tried putting it on my kids plastic jungle-gym/slide set, but when I missed the arrows would skim off the plastic rails on the gym (or stick with a thud!) bending them.

I have enough of a slope in my yard that I don't have to worry too much about backstop, but is there a target out there that is freestanding (like an easel) or do I have to go find hay bales?

Also, are bent aluminum arrows not fixable?  The local archery shop told me they were too bent to fix without breaking (and was quick to try and sell me on carbon arrows).    "[dntthnk]"

Savate, there are several that sit on the ground. I use the Block target, it's almost square & won't tip over. Frank

Frank V,
But then aren't you always shooting down at the ground if the target is sitting on the ground?

bowmofo,
I've thought about hanging from a tree  :)  but the target I have is styrfoam wrapped in plastic...I think it would rip right off anything I hang it off.

Is there a 4 or 3 legged stand of some kind out there that is stable?

Maybe bungee cords to hold it firm on the picnic table?

I know the target I have 2 I drive long nails (aka spikes) into the upper part of the cube about 4" in from the sides. I made a triod of 10ft long tree limbs and hang it with ropes from the front 2. If tree limbs are not available to yuu. You could get 10' pvc 1 1/2" around to do the same. hope this helps.

One of these has an adjustable height and the other is stationary.

The adjustable model will use stand-off conduit holding clamps to make it adjustable. You can use bungee cords to hold the target in place for both models. The adjustable model will need holes drilled in the wood platform or eyebolts installed to hook the bungee cords into. If you drill holes you will need two holes per corner, a 1” diameter (approximately) and a ½” diameter. The bungee hook will pass through the 1” hole and hook into the ½” hole.

Try putting some small sandbags on top of the target.

We use plastic feed bags that we pick up from our local Co-op store and stuff them with plastic shopping bags. Make sure you pack it fairly tight.
You can also use old clothing as well.
Tie off the top of the bag and now you have a cheap target bag.
