Dominant eye for shooting
« on: August 19, 2008, 07:23:00 PM »
My dad and I were shooting in the yard the other day, I was shootin my longbow an he was shootin one of those wheeled things, then I let him shoot my longbow a few times and couldnt hit crap when had both eyes open. I shoot with both open and shoot fine. then he started shootin with his left closed and didnt shoot too bad. I have been tryin to get him to get a traditional bow, but most people i talk to tell me that he would have to shoot left handed cuz hes left eye dominant. Do any of you guys shoot with one eye closed? Or should he forget about that and just start tryin to shoot lefty?

I shoot with my left eye closed since I am left eye dominant and right handed. I gap shoot and since my right eye is the only one open I use the gun barrel method. I tried to switch to lefty but it was just too awkward for me. Some people say that you lose depth perception with one eye closed but my rebutle is my eyes are both open before I release so that depth perception thing doesnt bother me. LOL

I am left eye dominant but shoot my trad bows right handed. I keep both eyes open. I do not look down the arrow at all. Absolutely no aiming. Just repetition. After a while it becomes second nature. Its a struggle at first - then it comes to you.

I've shot right handed for 35 or 40 years; I am right eyed dominant.. Recently, I had to switch to left handed shooting because of problems in my right hand..

At first I had lots of trouble trying keep both eyes open.. Now after shooting for 6 or 8 weeks with both eyes open I'm doing far better than I ever thought I would.. So, I've found that you can shoot left handed but right eyed dominant..
Lots of diligance and effort but it can be done.

i am left eye dominant right handed and tried right handed in trad bc i had been doing it with wheels and couldnt hit anything.  I probably could have trained myself into the bulls eye but lost patience and switched to lefty.

When i first shot a left handed bow it felt so good and everything just clicked.  I would recommend switching to left if your left eye dominant.

There's a real super helpful member named Dr. Jay Kidwell, goes by Jkid, (I think) He is a sports psychologist who has written a great book on traditional shooting. It is the best writing on target panic and is 100% successful too! Well Dr Jay says that in archery the dominant eye thing is a myth, and explains it. you can talk to him on line for free, hes a shooter/hunter. I can't say enough about this guy, He helps everybody at no charge over the Internet. I bought his book, it was cheep, around $14.00 i think, and refer back it to every now and then. An easy read. And no I don't work for him.  :clapper:
