Spine and Tuning confusion is setting in
« on: December 23, 2009, 06:49:00 PM »
First off the set up.
45lb@28" Howatt Stick
Draw lenght 28"
Easton Gamegetter 2016 30"
175 grain breadhead
3 rw 5"Feathers
I shoot 3 under.
nock height 5/8"
Right Handed

shooting at 15 yards 2 fletched arrows 2 bareshafts

Up/down impact is good with both fletched and bareshafts.

The Fletched arrows are hitting about 2" to the right of target point. Normally I shoot about a 4" group at 15 yards.

Now here is what I do not get. The impact point of the bareshafts is the same as the fletched, However the shafts are hitting the target at a sharp angle to the right. (leaning to the left)One of them even came out the right side of my block target.

Think that the arrow is too stiff?

I am just not sure on this one.

Awaiting input from you guys.
Thanks,
James

I would back up a bit more and shoot at a minimum of 20 yards for bare shaft to fletched tuning.  15 yards is to close.  Don't mix up pure bare shaft tuning with bare shaft to fletched.  We would all get confused.

If your a right handed shooter your bare shafts hitting right means they are weak and you need to shorten them a bit.  Cut no more than 1/4 inch at a time.  You are close with only two inches seperating the groups.  Also know that if you are to stiff already by cutting them to short to start you could be getting false right hits due to the tail of the shafts hitting riser as they pass.  How are you fletchings doing?  Are the getting wear?  This would indicate to stiff of a shaft.

Lots more people will weight in here I am sure.

The bareshafts are hitting near the same spot. However the bareshafts nocks are way to the left. The arrow is leaning alot. The nock is left of the point (if this makes any sense). Its like I shot at my target from the left side.

The on on the left indicates the bareshaft and the one on the right is the fletched shaft. This is supposed to simulate a top view looking down at the arrows.

Tell us if you're right or left-handed.
I recommend testing at 20 yards to amplify
your results.

Some say ignore nock left, nock right issues,
others tune by that indicator alone. I use both
the nock left/right, and how well the bare impact with fletched.

well that sketch  did not come out right. The one on the left was suppose to make a diagonal line .

I think that 2016s are too stiff for 45@28!  Even cut to 30".  Try some 1916s and you will be closer.

Starting to agree with you.

I will try 1916 or probably just use 45-50 wood if I can get them to tune correctly.
