Double anchor - Thanks Terry
« on: March 09, 2010, 08:49:00 PM »
I have been working on this quote from Terry for the past 2 weeks and this has improved my shooting more than anything. I think the double anchor has made a much more repeatable shot and a lot more accurate.  I think coming further back to anchor my thumb base knuckle behind my jaw and under my ear has made for much better back tension and has got my elbow in the correct alignment for the first time. Below is the quote from Terry.

The 2nd anchor for me insures that I get the proper alignment and back tension.

If you just anchor in the corner of the mouth, your elbow can be pointing anywhere....by sliding my thumb base knuckle behind my jaw under my ear....I'm there...all aligned with proper back tension.

I worked on this on the bale and grooved it in, I do not have to think about it at all, its just the way I shoot now as the arrow don't go till that 2nd anchor is obtained. Its ingrained into my subconcious and really helps keep windage issues at bay.

I was shooting with a single anchor and struggling. I switched from a single anchor to the way Terry recommended and my accuracy and groups have improved greatly. Now it feels right every time I release the arrow.

Thank you very much!

I have been working on a triple anchor by adding the fletching touching my nose as well as the two you have mentioned. Tough at first but getting the hang of it.

What crotch horn said - I like it a lot (when i get it right - LOL). Trying to teach old dogs (and Marines) new tricks is a real chore sometimes, though    :D   It's really a mess when you wind up with a shorter/smaller fletching on the shaft that's on your bow string      (Try to get your nose on one of those - LOL)

i reciently made some changes i went from a single anchor : eye tooth / index finger . to a lower hand placement and i found four anchor points my index touchs a spot on my lower jaw directly below former placement thumb slips into my jaw below my ear and the string touches tip of nose/corner of mouth . its brought my elbow down a bit made it easier to hold at draw and a steadier hold as well . only problem im havin is lack of practice time to get the muscle memory in tune . synce we just had another baby boy march 10th . william hunter is his name . im hopin to get some time atthe range to practice befor second leg of the tripple crown . next month. wishme luck
form is everything! shoot well shoot hard.

If you have fat cheeks like me you can have a triple anchor, nock in cheek ,finger in corner of mouth and knuckle under the jaw bone. It is amazing how good you can shoot with a good solid anchor and back tension. Plus it makes a 50# bow shoot like it is 55#, Dan Quillian told me that years ago " if everyone would egt another 1/2" draw they would be better off with 50# instead of 55#"

Question...are you hitting both simultaneously or at different times?  Just starting out and had index finger/corner of mouth anchor.  Now worked in thumb/jaw bone hook anchor for the double.  I now find myself setting w/the second anchor first then positioning or repositioning so that other anchor is in place.

I bring my middle finger to the corner of my mouth....then keep coming back actually pulling my mouth anchor reaward till my thumb base knuckle slides in behind my ear.....then the arrow is gone.

Ok, I am new to the forum. However I am not new to archery. I have been shooting a few years. About 30 or so. I understand the double anchor point but how does that make my elbow go into some geometrical sweet spot so-to-speak? i shoot good out to about 25 yards but am wanting to get it out to 40 or better. Some one suggested a double anchor and then I read some threads on the elbow geometry, back alignment, holding your tongue out and so on. I can't hit a buss at forty but will drill pie plates all day at 25. What gives?

Thanks fornthe tip. I've tried to find a good double anchor before and nothing seemed to work too well for me. Terry's comment that his double is really a consecutive set of anchors helps a lot. That is what I've been doing the past week or so and it's helped a good bit. Find corner of mouth then keep going back to that jaw bone/ under the ear spot and there the arrow finds it's way out of my fingers.

Cojaq,

Get the DVD 'The Bowhunters of Trad Gang'.  Terry goes into detail on the double anchor among other aspects of alignment and field hunting tips.

Plus, you just gotta see the bull frog hunt.

i double anchor with my thumb knuckle behind my jaw and pointer finger in the corner of my mouth. sort of a low anchor but has been the most comfortable double anchor for me.  :archer:
