Feathers cutting my hand
« on: May 23, 2010, 06:04:00 PM »
I am shooting a GN critter gitter. I am having trouble with my arrows cutting my bow hand. I have matched arrows that shoot well. I have adjusted the nock to the proper position. I have tried two under and three under and cant seem to alleviate the problem just wondering if any one has any other  ideas   :help:

go to home depot and get a lite pair of pig skin and breathable web material for the bow hand.  If everything else is good, why change it?

Thanks Mike I'll just continue to shoot with the glove on my bow hand.

I get cuts with my Hill longbow if I use right wing feathers (I'm right handed). I don't have that problem with left wing.

You could also rotate your nocks.

It happens with 3 feathers or 4 feathers I have always shot left wing due to rotation. The handle is hill type not indexed like my bear patriot.

sometmes it happens to me in sperts im not sure why must have something to do with how i grab the bow some of the time .its been a while synce its happend but ive been changing allot of things in my form and all aspects there of . gl play with how you hold the bow its probably a very small adjustment .
form is everything! shoot well shoot hard.

there is a tendency to lift the index finger with a straight or dished grip for some.  If you are a lefty right wing feathers will be better for this, if you are righty with left wing fletch you can rotate the arrow counter clock wise to the nock a little to turn the bottom feather into the bow.

Like pavan says, sometimes a slight nock rotation will take care of it.  Also make sure you add a drop of glue to the end of your fletch so the feather quill doesn't bite you.  If all else fails, just wear the glove.  Many self bow shooters use a glove because most shoot off the top of their nuckles and it works great for them.
If it isn't life or death, it's no big deal.

A dab of glue on the front edge of each feather is a good idea as Doc P suggests.  Might also raise your nock point a little and/or shoot cock feather in.  Each of those provide more feather clearance.  Can also simply position your hand a little lower on the grip.

You can also raise your bow shelf by adding something like a piece of leather, then putting anytype material you would normally use on your shelf.

I had same problem with a Hill bow. Never did solve the problem. Got rid of the bow when my shoulder started giving me problems (to heavy). The glove sounds like the best solution.

Yups ... I have the same problem ... the feathers cutting into my index finger on my bow hand.

I have been shooting with a leather glove ... and as you can see after two years of shooting the feathers are starting to rip the glove apart ... I guess I need a new one ... ;-(

I am shooting a Tomahawk SS longbow ...

Try shooting cock feather in.  I know it goes against everything we were ever taught and intuitively seems like a bad idea.  I was having that problem with one of my bows and flipped the arrow over and problem solved.  No ill affect on arrow flight.

I have found in my selfbows that I shoot off of the hand that if I raise my nock point a bit higher that I bleed less. Been looking at a shooting glove marketed by Three Rivers that might help.

I have only experienced this with RW feathers.  I'm a right hand shooter.  With LW never a problem.
