I tend to mix it up. Inside 40 yards I shoot instinctive, past 40 yards on targets and 3-D I shoot point of aim.  Gap is similar.  I use point of aim / gap to compensate for my lack of experience at long range shooting.  As that grows I will switch back over to instinctive as my brain starts to judge the shots better.

The best archers will use both along with point of aim and anything else that will work to get the arrow to the mark. You do it long enough and any methods you use will become instinctive in the way you do it to the point you don't know how you shoot.jmo

I agree with what Rick Welch says. Every one gap shoots; it is just if you gap shoot subconsiously which is instinctively or consiously. I am a student of Rick and am trying to improve more on my eye/hand memory so I can be subconsious with my shooting at every distance.

I shoot instinctive and some people say its alot harder to shoot instinctive out at longer range then gap such as 40 to 50 yrds ect but in order to be good at that range you have to shoot that range instinctive people wonder why am i good at 15 to 20 yrds and not at 40 yrds well people most of the time shoot 15 to 20 yrds more often so they get better at it. Someone once said that, "the only truly instinctive shot is the very first shot you ever take" or something similar to that. I think I read that in Byron Ferguson's book. After that first shot, your brain will adjust your bow arm by using your eyes for seeing the arrow point and moving it to be closer to the target for the second shot and every shot thereafter, whether consciously or not. (man, did I ever slaughter that sentence!?)

To answer your question, I shoot more gap then instinctive except at 15 yds. and less. But I keep the target in focus, instead of the arrow point, at all ranges.

Use whatever works for you and stick with it, no matter what anyone says about your method of aiming.

I am working on a split vision gap method, I shot for nearly 40 years without ever nailing down my form.  Now that I am trying to teach my boys (and wife) how to shoot I need to have something to teach them.  I have always shot a sort of HH swing draw and shot instinctively, but I shot very erratically.  I am hoping with a method I can become more consistent.

Howard shot split vision gap.

Like said above shoot any style long enough and it builds up muscle memory and becomes "instinctive". Practice with proper form will get the arrow where it belongs.

I shoot mainly split vision, but also shoot instinctive as situations arise and change.
After 40 yards I shoot quite well off the point of my arrow.
I guess I gap after my point on but not inside it.

It's all rock in roll too me.
Winning or losing is not the important thing,,the important thing is how well you played the game.
