Those clickers WORK!!!!!!
« on: September 10, 2010, 07:15:00 PM »
I've been having some problems being consistent with my draw. I read an article about clickers in TBH and it got to thinking that one of those might help me get to where I want to be with my shooting. I ordered one but still didn't put it on my bow because I just didn't want to rely on it and I didn't want it on my bow. Well this evening I was shooting and just couldn't get to full draw like I should. A problem I've been having for awhile. So I thought the heck with it I'm going to try that thing out. I got it set up the way I wanted and then went to shoot. WOW my first group was perfect. I can hit the same draw length every time and my shooting is way more consistent. I don't have to think in my mind about hitting anchor and can just concentrate on my target. I should have been using one a long time ago.

I'm about to set one up on my bow too, as I have the same problem.

Mocsin,
Glad it worked for you!  I'll be trying one very soon as I have become the king of the "Target Panic Short Draw"!
My ability to reach a consistent anchor point has deteriorated the more I practice.
I've tried every drill posted on the shooters forum, and I've read "Instinctive Archery Insights" by Dr. Kidwell a dozen times and have used his recommended drills, but no improvement.
The clicker is my last, best chance.
Shooting had gotten frustrating, not fun, and that aint good! Really glad it worked for you, hope I'm that fortunate!

Hang in there sendero. I think it will work. Lets your mind focus on aiming and not drawing. Also get away form the practice target and hit the fields and woods and shoot blunts at what ever you can find and have some fun. That helps get your mind off how bad our shooting is. The main thing is never give up. We are the outsiders in the hunting world and they don't need to see us give up our hard way of doing things.

I've had a clicker in my box so long that the sticky back had rotted off!  Went to Radio Shack and bought some attachments, set up the clicker and boy, what a difference.  Didn't know I needed one till I tried it.

Mocsin, thanks for the words of encouragement!
I'm going to give a clicker a try and I really hope it helps, my anchor has gone from middle finger corner of my mouth to "base of thumb anywhere near my face"! LOL. If it looks good, I drop the string!
I shoot pretty good I think, I just can't get the full potential out of my bows drawing 2 inches short everytime!
My Black Widow PLV goes from 46lbs to over 100 lbs in the last inch to my anchor point!

Velcro works good to attach them to the bow and makes it easy to get them on and off for twisting string and such.

I've been doing the clicker on the bow....clicker off the bow for over 20 years. (recurve, longbow, and even compound) I thought I had it beat this spring and hunted bears without one on my bow. Big bear comes in and instinct takes over....I short draw and release about an inch and a half short of where I should be (which is only 27 1/2 to begin with) and fortunately still heart shoot the bear. Good thing I had a 625 grain arrow.

My point here is that not only am I dealing with target panic but I also owe it to the animal to shoot a set-up with enough energy to get the job done. Already having a short draw length and not shooting a heavy bow I really need to reach full draw......That's why the clicker is back on the bow!

I went to one of Rod's classes last spring.  I have used the clicker quite a bit over the last few years.  No target panic, but also knew I was not drawing the same every time.  The clicker helped, but my eeyes were opened after I attended class.

I was using the clicker to tell me to let go of the string.  Now I use the clicker to initiate my expansion.  Big difference.  I also learned how to use my back muscles and what proper alignment looks and feels like.  I still am working on pulling thru the shot, but boy, my shooting is much improved!

So, the moral to my story is set up and use your clicker right and if there is any way possible, get to one of Rod's classes--you WILL learn something and improve!

Very true Steve O. The clicker should be used as a means for expansion and not a cruch for short drawing. The best way to beat under drawing is a proper form which you work out on the blank bale. Once proper form is ingrained in your memory both mind and muscle the clicker isn't really needed. I too was having problems short drawing but now come to full draw every time thanks to Rods advice on the video. When I feel myself slipping back to drawing short I get close again and go thru my mind the three phases of the draw Rod says and this gets me thru it.

Steve, just remember that the back muscles are what pulls the drawing arm back behind you and this makes the release happen. Don't try to actually pull with your arm to make the release happen. This is the expansion phase and last part of the draw that brings you to conclusion. I have just about wore out the drawing part Rod talks about of my dvd watching it over and over again to ingrain this into my mind and use it to help me get thru rough parts when needed.

I have been watching the Archery World Cup lately and one thing you will notice about all the archers on there is perfect form. They all have it and thou they are using sights and anchor differently then we do they still maintain perfect form. If you watch closely you will see their clickers fall after the expansion phase and after they have been at full draw for awhile.

Where do I find this video? I do not use my back muscles when I shoot and am going to move to a lighter bow until I can maintain proper form. Thanks for the advice.

Just about any archery shop that sells shooting dvds should have them both online and off.
Also I must really apologize for leaving Larry Yein out in my speaking of this dvd. Larry is also a champion archer and also does an excellent job on this dvd.

The dvd will help but also using a Formaster will teach you proper use of back muscles and how it feels. Rod also talks about the Formaster and how to use it on the dvd. Good idea about the lighter bow till you get the form down. It will be tough enough at first till you get it down. I still use a lighter bow for form work. There is nothing macho about having a good form and big poundage that you can't hold back wont help. What a good form will do is help your shooting and later you can always move up in weight(maybe quicker than you think).
