Going from split finger to 3 under??? What do you think??

I shot split for a lot of years, then trained to be a NASP instructor and they teach 3-under, so I switched.  Shot three under and liked it. Just bought a used longbow that was tillered for split, so started shooting split again.  It immediately felt natural, and my s=accuracy was great.  I find my confidence at longer ranges is better.  It has gotten cold so my shooting with the new bow has been limited, but I will be interested to see how my shooting with the new bow and split compares to how I shot last year 3 under with the old bow when I start up my school archery club again.

after reading all the replies i'am gonna give 3 under a try, i have always shot split fingers on longbows, recurves and compounds

well i gave 3 under a try and i think i'am gonna stick with it for awhile and see how it goes, feels more comfortable drawing the bow back and i seen to be more acurate, just had to raise my nock point a little

3 under gives a very different 'sight' picture.  By that I mean it brings the tip of the arrow into a more prominent position as you draw.  For folks who gap shoot, this will shorten you point on distance.

It also allows the use of short sight windows for folks who don't cant the bow much.

Split fingers works best for me . Kinda curious if all the guys shooting 3 under have any bow tuning issues since a lot of bows are tillered for split or 3 under ?

Did any of you folks who switched from split fingers to three under have to retune your set up, from an arrow spine standpoint? Every time I try it, the arrows I shoot split fingers with impact left, as if they are too stiff. Could it be three under cleans up my release that much, or is something else going on here?

Some people seem to experience a slight reduction in draw length from what I've read, that may cause your arrows to act stiff. Don't take it from me though..... I shoot split.

I used split and found I was pinching the arrow often. I would focus on not pinching it, but that only hurt my focus on target. You know your pinching when the arrow comes off the shelf, even a little. I tried 3 under and ZERO arrow pinch. That alone accounts for most of the accuracy improvement guys experience, in my opinion. Ive tried split just for giggles and Im lucky to hit the target now. I see no reason other then trick shots to use split where you can pinch the knock on purpose. AS for tuning, yes the bow needs to be tuned for 3 under in terms of knock height. I have never measured my bow to determine if its tillered for split or 3 under. I can tell you my short Kmag does not like 3 under, get unusual wear on the shelf and the arrow makes noise as it hits the shelf. I only shot that bow 3 under for a month or so and got a 64" long bow and its silent and no finger pinch. 8^)

Do you really need a bow that is tillered for three under to shoot that way? I shoot three under and don't have a bow that is tillered for three under. I'm assuming that it's not that big of a deal. Is it really that noticable?

You don't need a bow tillered for 3 under to shoot that way. You most likely will have to raise your nocking point a bit though.

I posted early on this thread but want to add some stuff.  

I have been shooting 3 under since the late 60's.  Changed from split when a really good target archer told me to try it.  This discussion has been going on for a long time.  Seems we will always have the question.

I am truely more comfortable with three under because I have more confidence in it. I can also say that over the last bit of time, even as old as I am, I have finally refined my anchor to one spot.  However, I have experimented with string walking a bit.  It works like a charm at closer the POI distances.  Since we are bowhunter who take good shots it makes sence to me.  Think turkey out of a blind situation at 15 yds or so.

Your bow does not have to be tillered for 3 under.  In fact, of all my bows, only the one that is currently on order is/will be tillered that way.

I think the allignment under your eye makes the difference.  Now, that having been said, I know some tough three under shooters that do not anchor under their eye.  The still shoot lights out.

Guys, its like choosing to shoot trad...  Its a personal thing.  What ever floats yer boat.  However, take a look at the really good recurve and I think Long Bow NFAA shooters......
