More accurate with a longbow the a recurve
« on: December 30, 2010, 04:14:00 PM »
I had some questions on my shooting. I switched to my recurve from my longbows and notice I am ALL OVER the place. Not to sure whats going on, its even 2-3#s lighter then my longbows. I have shot 300 to 500 arrows already to allow for my mind "to adjust". I usually never had a problem switching back and forth.

I shoot the CX 350 with a 260 tip and a 100 brass insert. I shoot this arrow with all of my bows with good results.. ( my bows are listed below). What do you think is going on? I seem to be shooting a majority to the right. My brace height is set to 7 1/4 to 7 1/2 ( its what is recommended).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I tried shooting with my quiver on and off. Usually shoot with it on at all times. No change.

I have found that I have a release that is not good enough for many recurves. I have a hard release.  Some recurves do not like it, but my longbows function best with it.  then again my favorite longbows still put out a good arrow with a soft release.  I would not rule out a tuning issue, if your release has changed some how, you could be getting a different dynamic than what you used to have when switching.

Thats some beef upfront! I love it. Give your curve more time. It took me alot more than 400-500 shots to get my Robertson cooking, I was a 100% longbow for a long time. I shoot both types the same now.

For what its worth, I bet I shot at least 4-5" right at 15 yards for a week! The cut beyond center really messed with me.

I'm with Pearl Drums but my longbow would hit left for a while.I stuck with it and now you could'nt pry it out of my hand.Still shoot my curve better though.Dont give up.

if you're gripping your recurve the same as you do a longbow, that would make a difference.

Nice when you can shoot a Longbow better than a Recurve, the real trick is to shoot your Longbow better than all the other Recurves

Richard,
I think anyone switching bows like you are doing can cause some variation in your shooting but when you say "I am ALL OVER the place.", I think (and probably so do you) that there are may be other factors you need to check. What exactly does "all over the place?  Majority is to the right but is it consistently to the right?

We really don't have enough info to be able to help you and quite frankly, I have never had such dramatic difficulty switching back and forth.

Sounds like hardware problems worst case and like
Snowleopard said...maybe simply the way you are gripping the bow.

If you are shooting any kind of group and the group is not too far right then as PearlDrums said is good...you just need to make an adjustment.

i have been shootin a recurve for years now and never good get it shooting accurate enough for me.  i broke out a long bow my grand pa gave me a long time ago and im shooting really good groups now. its 4" longer and about 6# heavier then he recurve but i just plan shoot it way way better. i just shot them back to back over and over and the recurve just wont group for me. its all over compared to the LB wear at 10 yds the feathers are touching.  first day in years since i shot his bow.  guess i just like longer long bows more then short recurves

Recurves are more tempermentel to string torque then long bows. You might want to give that a look see.

If you go back to your longbow, does your accuracy return? Perhaps your grip or bow arm position is different.

The problem could be unrelated to which bow. Do you use a glove? I used to use a Neet glove, but when it wore too much, I started getting bad releases.

You might also try resting for a few days, or just shooting fewer arrows.

I switched to take down long bows from recurves last summer, and for me they work great. It may sound nuts, but the longbow limbs to me seem much more stable towards the limb tips and after buying my first set of long bow limbs what I noticed (shows up better with lighter limbs) is that if with the bow strung, you hold one of the limbs, either end, at about mid limb and then grasp towards the limb tip with your other end with a recurve and just wiggle the tip back and forth can be done easily with a recurve, while it is nearly impossible with a longbow. It would seem to me that any additional torque you put on your bow in the way you hold your grip or torque your string, would cause a bit more of limb twist in a recurve, again, I think this would show up more on a lighter bow. Just my opinion and could be some of your problem. Again, I am now sold on long bow limbs.

Among the many things that could be affecting your accuracy, you may also add, that you could be twisting the limbs when shooting. Twisting is more often done with recurves, and would put you all over the place with accuracy. The thin limbs of longbows "discourage" twisting.
The biggest differences between recurve and longbow, for me, lie in the way the bows are gripped ..... and the type of grip.
Then again, maybe you just shoot a longbow better ?

It seems to me when I switch from by longbow to my recurve, I have a hard time finding the right grip. The thin grip on my longbow is easy to set in the crease of my palm, whereas the recurve fills much more of my grip and therefore more room for error.

I have just gotten into shooting longbows the past few months, and being an info hound and tuning geek. I have come to a few conclusions concerning recurves v.s. longbows.
I am a long time curve shooter with lots of tournament wins under my belt, over 15 years.
My interest in longbows was an accident...............a very happy one.
If my curve is not tuned perfectly, it will string arrows on a horizontal plane..........I realized this long ago.
I shoot a Palmer Legend 50#@ 28" w/ a draw of 26 1/2. I shoot Gold Tip 3555 arrows @ 26 5/8" w/ 100g tips (app 340g). 202 fps average, and very consistent for 3D.
(For hunting I use a much heavier tapered cedar shaft w/ Howard Hill broad-heads)

I recently acquired two Bushman American Native Longbows, a 64" pulling 45# at my draw, and a 58" carbon pulling the same.
 http://bushmenbows.com/

I am so blown away that I have already sold one of my Palmers!
The Bushmans by Steven Jewett are amazing.
I set both up for 3D, and chose the bows specifically to shoot a .600 spine arrow in competitions. (app. 300g)
The 64" Bushman chronograph average is 197 fps.
The Bushman Carbons average is 220 fps, and shoots right where I look like a laser!!!
The stiff tips on the longbows seem to mitigate the archers parallax, and shoot to center w/ amazing consistency using a variety of arrow spines.  I do find that the fps of the Bushmans will be affected by the consistency of my form, and length of draw, as indicated by the chronograph.
Simply drawing this Bushman Carbon to a full 28' yields speeds in excess if 230 fps !!!
WOW!
If my anchor is not consistent, the arrows will string on a vertical plane accounting for the velocity differences, but still hit to center perfectly. Practicing w/ the chrono has solved that.
Anybody else have any experience with these bows?
My mouth was hanging open gasping for air after the initial testing.
I will be shooting a 3D competition this weekend, and cannot wait to shoot my new longbow!

I think a longbow is more forgiving than a recurve, seems you can get away with more mistakes in your form when shooting.
