Went to 3 under today
« on: February 17, 2011, 03:56:00 PM »
And WOW! The results were amazing. I wonder why I haven't tried it before? I did notice, however, that its a LOT noisier than split finger. I wonder if there is something I can do to quiet the shot down some?

Good for you. Try raising your nock point higher up the string. I keep mine at 3/4" above shelf line and I've never had a problem with excessive noise shooting 3 under. I had a Beeler hybrid that was whisper quiet even without silencers!

SWEET! I'm a 5/8" above center now, and she is a lot quieter---shoots better, too.

Play with your brace height a little. Shooting 3 under and moving the nock point up makes the bow shoot a little different so changing the brace height sometimes quiets the bow a bit......YMMV

I also just switched to 3 under, shot split fingers for many years and really like 3 under much better. seem to get off the string better, still adjusting nock and brace heighth.

I had thought of switching to three under.  All the guys I shoot with claim it is more accuate.  However I target shot to hone my hunting skills and have found two under better for hunting application.  By this I mean the fingers are squeezed into the arrow which locks it to the string and does not allow it to turn on the string.  This can come in handy when that animal comes in the wrong way and you have to turn your bow window down.  If you are concerned with target score it is a better method. But if you hunt you answered your own question when you said it was noisier. Good luck with which ever one you use.

Saw a tape with Ricky Welch, tried it and have not even considered going back to split fingers.

I'm going to try and raise my nock point to take care of the noise issue. One question... is the additional noised caused by where the arrow is coming off the string or where your fingers are coming off the string? Does raising the nock point just counter-act finger placement lower on the string to reduce noise?

Soooooooo wierd that you just posted this thread. I literally JUST logged on here to post this EXACT thread. Not 5 minutes ago I walked in the house from shooting my bow. I too switched to 3 under for the first time tonight.

Wow..... I have never shot so consistenly in my life. It seems like 3 under some how opened up my sight picture looking at the target, made it easier to hold my bow back, and made my release 10 times smoother. I can't believe I haven't tried this before....

One thing that did happen to me tho. I had 'string slap' probably 10 times. I have never had to wear an arm guard before tonight, and have never slapped my forearm with the string. Any thoughts on why the switch to 3 under would cause this?????

Thanks a bunch, and congrats on making the switch.

Did you guys reflecth your arrows? Or what are you using for a anchor point? Just started shooting trad and wondering if I should switch to 3 under while I'm still new at this.

When you guys switched to 3 Under did you shoot 3 ft. low. I have tried it several times on the 30 inch stuffed bags on our bowhunter range and continue to hit the dirt in front of the target. I shot about 30 arrows the other night and went back to shooting split finger.

my arrow was nocked a lot higher to shoot split fingers, but to get better accuracy , i dropped my nock point,i am now only just about 3/8" above square now, so that did bring my impact point up a bit- playing around with the nock position was the biggest advancement i have made with changing to 3 under - the nock point usually  has to change- and i also changed my strike plate for a softer one too, to get my arrows over right a little, its all a pain in the proverbial- but you gotta do it.

It's generally necessary on most bows to raise the nock height to 3/8" to 3/4" above center to facilitate proper arrow flight with '3 under'. This will also naturally put the hand, eye and arrow in better alignment relative to the target. The added noise some are noticing is due to an improperly tuned bow and/or misplaced silencers. Fix those and it will be deadly quiet. I use a multiple anchor point system that includes my middle finger tip to the corner of the mouth, nose touching the cock feather and the string touching the eyebrow.

There is no doubt, whatsoever, that this has consistently been the most accurate method for me and nothing else even comes close. At every close yardage mark, the arrow will appear in the periphery below the target and my brain has learned to subconciously 'gap' the arrow. At 30 yards, I can place the arrow tip on the target and shoot. Beyond 30 yards, the arrow is now some distance above the target and my brain then reverts to 'gapping' once again. It is simple and very, very effective.

yeah I cant shoot 3 under or with a raised nock. messes me all up. maybe Ill try again some time.

USN sam- your probably just fcusing to much on your fingers and forgetting about your grip. arc that wrist. I shoot with an arm guard but Im using a low braced long bow.

My nock piece is completely squared up, not high or low, and it doesn't seem to be messing me up at all. Maybe it will over time but not sure.

I haven't refletched my arrows either. So... 3 under, with helical flethcing, and a completely 'square' nock point seems to be working just fine.

Does not work for me, but whatever works, we all need to find our own best way!
