Have a question for tab shooters?
« on: March 14, 2011, 09:31:00 PM »
I shoot a glove three under, and recently tried a tab.  I really like the tab and the cleaner release that I got, however, it seemed to hit me in the face or slap me in the lips.  I was shooting a three under cordovan tab I believe.  Is this common or is it the tab or my form?

If thy tab offends thee - cut it off.

I trim mine even with my fingertips.

Trimming it will definitely help.  Be sure to trim it a little at a time.  Once you reach the proverbial 'magic spot', it should work well.

Too long and you will get this face slap, too short and finger tips will sting on release.

For me when fingers straight the Tab looks slightly short but when hooked around string it's level with end of finger tips.

Spurs,

I have the same problems but I thought it was the string hitting my lips.  Now, I am wondering whether it is the cordovan tab, finger tips, or string....
May be some video will help......

Well, my buddy shoots a black widow, and the first few shots it does fine, but it eventually starts slapping his face.  I guess it would make since.  My glove has nothing longer than my finger tips therefore, no issues.  My tab hangs over my fingertips which is probably where the slap is coming from.  I am going to trim it when I get some time to shoot.

I use a trimmed large BW tab with an added finger spacer for my "pinchy" bows and a medium stock for others - though I do trim back the under layer of leather even on the mediums.

Pretty close to what I do.. My hand is a little larger and I am a little deeper with the tab.. a bit more finger tip exposed when the hand is flat, but the tip is covered when I hook up

I trimmed mine.  Problem solved.  The string slid across my face a few times, but I worked thru that.  I trimmed it just a little to short but it's gonna work.  Only once did I catch the end of my fingers.

Do any of you use the super tab 3 under by Alaskan Bow Supply? Thinking of changing from a glove d/t finger injury to my middle finger on shooting hand.
Thanks

Re Tab slap,
You can try to use some type of light powder on your tab. (sorry guys but "baby powder works well and smells nice lol) wipe it evenly in the direction of the string. Shoot a few arrows and the powder should build up and form a line where the string releases from the tab and shows where your fingers end. This will give you some place to start in trimming the tab. I make my own tabs and use soft leather and this works great. Hope it helps

I like to buy a large tab because the finger hole is larger and then trim the tab length to suit my shooting style.  Just make small cuts as you can't put it back on later.

Spurs, I've tried a cordovan tab from 3Rivers and think that I get string contact on my lip (not the tab).  The tab has fairly thick backing on it.

The best tab that I've shot over the years is a Neet Calf Hair tab, which I trim back a little.  This tab is very comfortable, not expensive, but the down side is the hair wears off.

Lately I've been shooting with a Fred Eichler cordovan tab from 3Rivers, and have no lip contact problems with this tab. It was easy to break-in and shows no wear after a lot of shooting. The cordovan and rubber back are thin, so you feel the string, which I like.  The best to you.

I find that the Black Widow Cordovan causes me discomfort as a result of the thick part which is closest to the hand.  I tuck the tab along my face as I go through the shot sequence and the thick part scratches my cheek as it goes by.  When I try to avoid the scratch, my RH shooting sends the arrow left.
