Tried some of what Asbell wrote
« on: May 07, 2011, 08:28:00 PM »
Today I tried some shots with a technique that Fred Asbell wrote in his latest book:

Advanced Instinctive Shooting for Bowhunting

I'm talking about the foot placement in the Stance section, where you are pretty much facing the target with the feet forward "for the most part" like as though you had walked up to the target instead of the classic square stance.

Well today I tried what he wrote with bending the knees & I see where the advantage is at on being able to shoot consistently like this for still hunting.

I'm wondering, is there anyone out there that shoots with this type of stance?

I tried and I just didnt like going that foot direction....I dont like the pressure it puts on the bow holding arm in the joint by facing the arm more to the front....Im sticking with my square stance.....unless I gain ALOT of weight and need clearance for my belly!!!

I shoot in many different positions and stances, including this one.
I also shoot with my back to the target and swing my upper body around. It prepares you for the unexpected situations in the field.

My thinking is just that BowsanAiros, to incoporate this stance as well as others including kneeling & what not for that hunting situation that may need a unconventional positioning.

Tried it,didn't like it.Really awkward for me,but not nearly as awkward as his"swing draw"style of shooting.Do what works for YOU.

The swing draw is not my thing either.

The so called swing draw style of shooting, isn't a style ,it's just a way of practicing.

It's actually not that hard to do.. All you have to do is practice it in stages.
Like any other way you shoot your bow..Usually you address the target with your feet perpendicular,
12 o'clock to the target every time you shoot. To shoot
the way I mentioned, all you have to do is plant your feet at 2 o'clock and shoot from there.
Then 4 o'clock, until you get around so your not facing the target.

The same goes for shooting with your feet Parallel "facing" the  target. Do it in stages until
you've reached the position you're looking for...

Doing it in stages makes it a bit easier to get used to it.

Eugene,

I saw it less as gospel and more as flexibility.  I believe his point was you will be ready for more game and make less movement if you don't have to always get in a square stance.  I don't open up as much as him (he even admits to loss of dl which I don't want at 27"), but have gotten away from shooting completely square and now vary it up more.  So I learned that from his stance chapter, which I think is useful.

Same thing with swing draw.  I believe it is also about flexibility and keeping focus on the target.  It has helped me keep my eye off the arrow as a reference.  Just like with stance, I don't do a full swing draw off the knee, I just raise the bow about 8" or so at draw.  It also helps me to remember "push-pull."

Both these things have helped my shooting.

Would you try to shoot a rifle accurately that way.  Why would you shoot a bow (accurately) that way.
