Care to critique my form?
« on: July 14, 2011, 08:22:00 AM »
Got my wife to come out and shoot a short video of a few arrows while I was shooting yesterday.  If y'all don't mind, I'd love to hear what I'm doing wrong and what I need to work on.  Thanks in advance for any help.

jonathon,
To my eye and with just this one view you are looking VERY good!!

At this point,  the real question is "are you happy with your shooting and comfortable with your form?"

It appears that you have all the parts working well and sticking with this form, getting it really automatic should take you to really good levels of accuracy.

3 David Miller bows
4 James Berry bows

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

Thanks for the encouragement, moe.  Everything feels pretty good with this form, save for the occassional collapse or snap shot, but I know fixing those are more of a matter of repitition, repitition, repitition.  I'm trying to get as many shots as possible in each day, but with the heat even this 50 pounder tends to wear me down around the 40-50 arrow mark.  I usually stop then to try and keep from engraining bad habits.  I really need to whip up a 40 pounder or so to drill with.

Jonathan..
I see nothing wrong with your form as well.
Most likely the reason you asked this question is because your accuracy isn't quite where you think it should
be. Considering you're consistent in all aspects of your form. And most likely you've been practicing
(really concentration) on your form for awhile.
This is the main reason why your accuracy isn't what you've expected..another words, you're over thinking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming that you're shooting Instinctive by watching your video. I see that
you come to your anchor point, with a slight pause, you then release.
If so, the next time you shoot, (FEEL your anchor point) be consistent with it and think about nothing else.
Make sure you focus on your target. The smallest you can see.

Get your wife to video tape you while doing this, you'll see for yourself that there isn't any difference in your
form by doing this. But you should see your accuracy improve substantially..

Thanks Bows, I think you've pretty much nailed it.  I'll shoot a really good group one round, and then the next my mind drifts to my form and the group loosens up a good bit.  My form is getting pretty close to being subconscious, but I'm not quite there yet.

Jonathan..
A spot is quite hard to focus on, with all other aspects of your shot going through your head.
If you're willing to take some shooting advice, try shooting at a vertical line 1/8" thick or thinner for awhile.
A line is much easier to focus on then a spot.. Start at about 3-5yds and walk out too any distance you're
comfortable with..Which could be 30-40yds after a week or so. And remember to ""FEEL"" your anchor point.
Then shoot at it horizontally for awhile, same process..
First of all, what you should see by doing this is small faults in your form which you can correct easily..
Because you'll be able to see them for yourself..

One mistake made by a new archer or someone changing any aspect of there shot is starting out at 10yds
and trying to correct any faults they have there. Not a good idea..
Start close, refine your accuracy and you'll build confidence ..

If you have any questions, ask. If you'd like another training exercise ,feel free to ask.
