Me or the arrow?
« on: August 07, 2011, 07:39:00 PM »
Ok,I am new to traditional and really have no one around that can help me. I have shot compounds for 30 years and have shot competively for the past 10 years in field archery. I also have a shooting coach for the compound but he's 3 hours away and don't have the time to visit him for stick bow. I have seen many videos and read plenty about true instinctive shooting, this is the way I want to go. I feel that I have pretty good form and follow thru. I can put 4 arrows in a 3" bull at twenty yards almost all the time. When I go to 30 yards or so,my arrows impact 5-6 inches to the right( I'm a right handed shooter) so my question is,is it that I haven't trained my hand/eye coordination for that distance or are my arrows under spines? I'm shooting a black widow psa2  50# at 28" with carbon express maxima hunters with foc and stock inserts with 100 grain field points. The arrows shoot great at 20 yards and closer. Should I shoot a lighter point or cut some off the arrow? I have about 11/2" I can cut off if needed. Thank you in advance

I should have also mentioned that I will be using this bow for hunting but limiting my shots to 15 yards or so for now. I am concerned that if I put broad heads on it that I will be way far right

Your form should be good already, just hang in there between 20-25yds and keep doing what your doing.

30yds will come soon, you my just be loosing focus as you back up further away.

You may want to try some 125grn points and see if they still fly good for ya.

Shoot a group with both bare shafts and fletched arrows at 20 yards.  If your groups are consistent with the bare shafts mixed in with the fletched arrows (regardless of where they group) its you.  If your bare shafts group differently than the fletched arrows its the equipment and you either need to alter your arrows or bow to correct it.

Easy way to tell if it’s the spine is to shoot a group with BH’s  and then repeat with FP’s if the BH’s hit to the right of the FP’s (for a RH shooter) then the arrows are weak. If the difference is only an inch or two you may be able to fine tune it with a brace height adjustment but if the difference is greater it will require a shortening of the arrow.

Note: For such tuning I use a paper plate as a target and only shoot one BH at a time, marking each with a number before pulling it, this helps to identify arrows which don’t play well with others at the same time I’m tuning spine…
