First recurve?
« on: November 04, 2011, 01:35:00 AM »
I have been shooting with a 45# recurve a buddies granpa gave me and am having trouble with the angle im holding my bow at. I shoot better when the bow is slanted so i dont have to keep my finger up to hold it on the rest. when i do use my finger i can feel the fletching hitting it? Dont want to devleop any bad habits yet so Any suggestions for a newbie or some good videos on form would help! also any one know of a very cheap way to make a 3 arrow quiver?

A slight cant is ok, and it does help with the arrow falling off.  Also gives a better view of the target.

As far as the arrow falling off the shelf you can cup your wrist a little as you grip the string with a deep hook hold (in joints of your first knuckle from the tips) and as you start your draw the wrist straightens out and rotates the string to the right keeping the arrow on the shelf.

Nothing wrong with canting at all....look down a few posts....there's a topic on canting.

Also, if you arrow is falling off...there's another issue that needs to be fixed with your grip on the string.  Canting to solve that is only a band aid for the real problem.

Once again Terry is right on !

I have the same problem when I don't draw back correctly, meaning I am drawing back but my elbow is out of alignment and that is why I am putting too much pressure on the string as I draw and it usually means a funky release too. If you pay attention to this it will go away, it was pretty easy to correct for me.

Can you explain the finger being hit by the feather situation? Are you leaving your bowhand finger extended upon release of the string with your other hand?
