Speed Shooting
« on: June 20, 2012, 01:28:00 PM »
I am very interested in how to speed load and shoot. Does anyone have any tips on how to shoot off about 3 arrows in rapid succession? I have seen videos on the Saracen method of speed shooting with relative accuracy. Does anyone know the technique to shoot and load your bow? the video I found showed a guy who could shoot off 3 arrows before the first one touched the ground. It doesn't show him as he loads so I can't wrap my mind around how he loads to fast.

I have read, on this forum and on various web information, that shooting three finger split and nocking the arrow above the nocking point on the string allows faster stringing of the arrow nock to the string. This being drawn from a back quiver and with the archer looking at the target and not the actual motions the draw hand is doing.

The reason for nocking above is to hit the string with the nock groove and slide it down into position on the string nock. All while in fluid motion and drawing, then releasing the arrow.

I shoot two finger under and have two nock points on my string, so looking for me is an almost absolute necessity.

Yes, nocking on top of the point is faster (but not sure that it is what the "speed" shooters are doing) AND it allows different diameter arrows to be shot without having to re-set the nocking point.  Hidden advantage.

Look up how to use a thumb ring or “dagger technique”. Hungarian, Mongols and pretty much all other fast shooting tribes used them.
Most horse bow archers hold their arrows in the hand they grip the bow with, completely cutting out the motions required to grab an arrow out of a quiver and nock it (Lajos Kassai does this)
You first want to develop the smoothest and most efficient shooting form you possibly can

This is how to do it
Look at your current form and find wasted motions (slowly positioning arrows under the knock point, slowly drawing the bow ect.) and find a way to make them more efficient without losing accuracy. Unnecessary motions= wasted time

Find a way to do two steps at once ( I swing draw and aim (split vision) in one motion, I also nock and arrow while positioning my body )

And finally (this will sound weird until I explain) learn how to shoot this form slow first and count off every step (1, 2, 3, 4 and release) you want to build up a consistent and SMOOTH form, and counting off helps your mind program your muscles. Speed comes with time and trying to learn smooth form with no wasted movements; while shooting fast will only result in lost arrows and missed targets.

I'm no master coach but that seems like the most common sense way do develop extremely fast shooting

I've watched the SCA guys doing their speed shooting and to be honest they mostly suck at it.  I suppose there must be a way to do it fast and accurately though.  If I had to depend on speed shooting to save my castle I'd darn sure make sure I had LOTS of archers because you'd need a lot of arrows to do the job due to the inaccuracy.

Lajos Kassai is a master of this method, you get a better view of what he's doing on this Youtube 'History channel' clip gets interesting about 2min into the clip (he hits all 12 Aerial targets in 17 secs)
