Shooting to the left. Help!
« on: July 17, 2012, 11:06:00 AM »
My arrows consistently hit to the left.  I've had a few people look at my form and given me suggestions; but I'm not making much improvement. I was grabbing my bow upon release (fixed that); shoulders were not lined up (fixed that); and arrows were spined to stiffly (fixed that).  I still seem to be shooting to the left.  Occassionally I'll get a group that is more around where I'm aiming, but not sure what I'm doing different when that happens.

A little info.  Shoot a 32lb recurve, 31inch draw, anchor at the corner of my mouth, no sights, arrows are spined at 500, 85pt grain point.

I know there's much more info needed and that a video of me shooting would get more useful feedback.  I'll try to do that soon.

Any thoughts?  Thanks.

Check the string/arrow alignment at anchor before release, your string needs to be centered in line with the arrow, RH shooters with constant left impacts tend to keep the string leaning to the right of the arrow.

Squirrelgravy,  Yep, a video will help.  First place I'd look at is your release (right handed?).  500 spine arrows with 85 Grain points is very stiff!  Have you tried  much heavier points?  How did you "fix" the "too stiff spine" if you are only using 85 gr points?

Arne, I did those corrections too, and in the end found out that my string was lightly shifted to the right and noticed the same problem with a couple of shooters at the club, think this was mentioned before on another post. But yes, guess it might not be that simple without a video.

Gravy...Your arrows are still too stiff....assuming your center shot is at zero and you left your arrows uncut at about 31-1/2" then for a 32 lb bow you need minimum 125 head with a 40 grain insert. Never cut a carbon arrow..always add or subtract point weight or build out or in your shelf.

Hope this helps...

32# at your draw length? Or is that what is marked on the bow, which would probably be at 28". Even at 31" those .500s are stiff with an 85gr point.
We are all here because we are not all there.

I do shoot right-handed.  The draw weight has been checked with a scale at 31 inches.  I hurt myself a few years ago and had to switch to a lighter recurve for awhile to build my strength back up and allow myself to rehab.

Yeah...it was recommended that I used 600 spine arrows; but the pro-shop talked me into 500's.  I'll correct that.

Not sure how much the inserts weigh. But the new arrows are flying pretty straight.  I'll check into a heavier point and see what the insert weighs with some new arrows.

Archer Errant - thanks for the tip on the string alignment.  I'll check that.

I'll get some videos soon.

Thanks for the help guys!

Moebow...I was shooting 400 spine arrows to begin with and went to 500.  Sounds like I need to go to 600 (?)  This was suggested to me by Rod Jenkins.  Sounds like I should also be shooting at least a 100 grain point (?)  Thoughts?

I agree with Rod, .600 spine and I'd even start with 125 grain points.  125s are kind of a "baseline" or "standard" point weight.  It will give you room to adjust up and down  if necessary.
