Short Little Woman Shooting Man's 50# Recurve
« on: December 06, 2012, 11:39:00 AM »
Hey y'all,

I am a brand new member of this forum and am fairly new to traditional archery (or for that matter, archery of any kind). I was directed to this fine forum by members of a knife forum I was already in. This is my first post and I'm starting with a question that I hope some of y'all experienced folks can help me with.

A few months ago my son and I purchased identical 50# Bear Grizzly Recurves, and even though we probably should have started with a lighter draw weight, we learned what we could, practiced a lot, and have gotten respectably good with them, regularly hitting our usual 20 oz. soft drink bottle target at 27 yards. This is my question:
My son's girlfriend is short, neighborhood of 5'2", and she shoots our bows because that's all she has right now. The thing is, she's gotten pretty darned good with them. Obviously she isn't reaching full (28") draw and therefore isn't pulling back the entire 50 pounds,  but the bows are comfortable for her to shoot and she enjoys it. What I want to know is this type of bow a viable option for her or would there be advantages for her having something taylored to her draw length and weight? The Bear bows are 58" long, by the way.
Thanks.

A 58" bow would be a good length for her, probably. 28" is about the max draw length for a 58" bow (some people would argue with me about that). But most people would agree that it is a good length bow for someone who has a 25-26" draw length. At 25-26"' she would be pulling 42-44#, which is on the heavy side for a beginner. However if she can pull to full draw and hold for a slow count of 5 without shaking, that probably means she can handle it.

Thanks McDave. I know that most people probably wouldn't recommend a 50# for a short female, but in this case several factors seem to come together to cause it to work for her. That's good, because I may have to go to a longer bow because my 29.5 draw length causes some stacking at the end, and if I do I can let her have mine. Thanks again!
