3 Under and dragging middle finger?
« on: April 18, 2013, 03:38:00 PM »
I switched from split to 3 under well over a year ago and have been very pleased with my accuracy improvements.

But...there's always a but in this game it seems....I can hardly release a shot without dragging my middle finger. I also had this problem to a lesser degree with split.

I take a deep hook and try to keep the back of my hand flat. Most of the pressure is definitely on the middle finger. Sometimes it takes so long for that middle finger to get out of the way the string actually whacks it pretty darned good. Causing some real pain after a couple of dozen arrows. Thing is I can mostly hit what I'm pointing at, but there has to be something amiss in my form.

I sure would like to get rid of that pain. Any ideas?

Thanks Gents,
Steve

Steve,

Sounds like you are thinking "shoot now" and trying to open your fingers to release the string.  IF your release is working correctly, there should be no pain or drag on the fingers.  Have you seen a video I did called "release tips?"  I shoot and show split finger in that video but that doesn't matter.  Split  or three under is just an accommodation for aiming and doesn't change the release.  If you want you can find the  video on YouTube,  "TheMoebow1"

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

Hey Steve, I'm certainly no expert, but have had similar experiences.  In my situation it was a bit of a collapse at the moment of release that created more drag on my fingers.  (My 6 year old daughter diagnosed it, "Dad, your arrow is moving forward a tiny bit just before you shoot.")!  What worked for me was to focus on my bow arm, namely to make sure I was "pushing" as much as I was pulling.  I don't even think there is any discernible forward movement of the bow arm, but the conscious pressure on the bow allowed for a much cleaner/crisper release and when I do it right my fingers feel nothing.  FYI.

Thanks Guys! I'll definitely check out the vids Moebow.

NBK - I think you are on to something there. I sometimes suffer from a form of target panic. It's from my compound days when I used a release and started to anticipate the shot. I would uncontrollably twitch, jerk and collapse my string arm forward trying to get the shot off. It still happens even now, almost 15 years later.

Which gets right back to Moebow's "shoot now" trigger.
