Shooting two arrows at once
« on: June 15, 2013, 12:14:00 AM »
Hey folks. Thanks so much to everybody who has replied and continues to reply to my thinking too much vs snap shooting post. Yall are such a helpful and informative bunch of people.

I've got another issue now that I'm thinking all comes down to my release....not my release so much as my finger placement on the string.

I can snap shoot my recurves all day long and I'm more than happy with my results......BUT....I've been playing with my Black Widow PLGA longbow for the past few weeks. This thing is driving me crazy!  I shoot split finger with a glove and the arrow keeps jumping off the shelf when I reach full draw.

So I gave up on the longbow today for a bit and picked up the stoutest recurve I've got.......then I put one arrow below my brass nock and another above it. I figured this would CURE my problem with finger pinch on the longbow...with twice as much nock space on the string to work around I'd have to do something different.

AND DID IT EVER!!!  It was my index finger causing the finger pinch and bad arrow flight/shots out of the longbow. I can now put 'em where I want 'em with the longbow.

But as an added bonus I can shoot TWO GoldTip 35-55 with 215 grains up front from 15 yards and get as much penetration as the wife's 35# Samick Sage. Plus, when you shoot two at once, you get the tightest groups you will ever see when you do it right....if you don't do it right then its in your string hand, which also shows you what you may be doing wrong upon release when shooting normally, with one arrow.

But as of right now, at 15 yards, I can make one shot with my Black Widow SA III 56# @ 27" and have two killing shots. Not that I would ever attempt that in a real hunting situation. But it has been something fun to toy around with and it helped me alot with my release.

Shag,

Allowing the fingers to pinch together is a VERY common cause of the arrow moving off the rest.  Your "discovery" is separating your fingers a little but as you point out isn't very practical unless you are developing a "trick shot."

Have you tried a tab with a finger spacer?? That might help.

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

3 under with a deep hook.  start with a relaxed wrist. problem solved.

Hey Arne,

I havent ever tried a tab although I did mean to go to the sporting goods store today and pick one up to give it a try. I've always shot with a glove and it was actually the raised part above the stitching that that was causing my finger pinch with the index finger.  Shooting the two arrows with the recurve is a cool trick shot and its a world of fun. But when I hold my index finger high enough on the longbow to avoid finger pinch it does feel kinda awkward. It keeps the arrow on the shelf but it isn't the position my hand wants to go to without thinking. As long as I'm playing in the yard with targets I'm fine with it....but I do worry about my finger placement in a high adrenaline hunting situation. Thanks for the help and suggestion.

Bear Heart,

I can't shoot 3 under. I've tried it more times than I can count and always with poor results. I know it works great for lots of folks and lots of shooting styles....it just isn't for me. It screws up my whole shot sequence. A deep hook also gives me problems. I have to shoot with a deep hook on my middle finger, and a relatively shallow hook on my index and ring fingers. I've flung thousands upon thousands of arrows and tried every way I've read, heard, or even imagined and I get the best arrow flight that way. A relaxed wrist does make a world of difference though. It took me forever to figure that one out.

Thanks alot for your time and responses guys.

Oh, and try shooting two arrows at once like I described sometime. Its more fun than a barrel of monkeys lol. I don't see how it could hurt the bow and it did help me with my finger placement....plus its just FUN!  Did I mention its fun? lol

Thanks again guys.
