shots per session
« on: July 25, 2013, 05:40:00 AM »
Hello fellow archers. I have been shooting for almost a year without paying much attention to my shooting form until recently I came across Moebow videos on youtube about teaching how to shoot a bow properly. My question would be: how many shots (engaging back muscles) should I make to ingrain into my muscles the correct technique? Please take into consideration that for almost a year I have been developing bad habits and right now it is really difficult to make the correct shot.
Thanks for your reply and greetings from Lithuania!

t4tutor,

Great question with no "set" answer.  Everyone is different.  Generally, we say that it takes 21 full practice sessions to build or change a habit.  For folks that shoot 3 times a week, that would be in the area of 2 months and concentrating on correct execution for each shot.  NOT really the number of arrows but reinforcing the new "habit" correctly EVERY practice session and EVERY shot.

In the beginning, most shooters that start truly engaging the back, will find that the length of the practice session is pretty short and you will fatigue and "feel" it the next day.  As you get better with it, your sessions will be longer and you will find that using the system will allow shooting heavier bows AFTER you learn.

DO NOT shoot at a bull's eye target in the beginning, only at a "blank bale" to catch your arrows.  Concentrate on WHAT you are doing and NOT on hitting anything.

Hope that helps!

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

Hi Arne,

I am happy that you took your time to answer my question again.
Yes, I did notice that pulling my 40 pounder Falco Spirit longbow has become very difficult (maybe awkward would be a better word), which is the indicator that I have been using completely different muscles. I have been using the BEST technique for almost 2 weeks by now and already noticed some improvement in my form. However, for the time being only 4 out of 10 shots make me completely satisfied with the quality I seek (not for accuracy, but correctness that you emphasize)
No flattering intended, but every single word in your reply is of golden value. Your answer fully covers what I am asking. Thank you again for showing me the way into the journey!
