3 under and point weight
« on: December 17, 2013, 06:47:00 PM »
I recently purchased a RER LX longbow that by the way I am just tickled with.  It is the smoothest bow I have shot to date and very fast.   I am a split finger shooter but this week while playing around on my blank bale tried 3 under.  The bow really responded with 3 under.  I started playing around with point weights and found that with a 200 grain point and my anchor I was pretty much point on at around 26 yards.
Question:  Is it normal with three under point on shooters to adjust the arrow weight to adjust the point on range.

You are moving the arrow nock up in relation to your eye.  That has the LARGEST effect on PO.  Arrow length is probably next.  Point weight is a SMALL player (if any effect at all).

I would advise, though, that just a very few sessions is not the best "test" for whether 3 under is what you want.  Try it for a couple months then decide.

I would adjust the point weight as a part of the arrow tuning process to get good arrow flight.  If I wanted to lower my point on, I would raise my anchor, or perhaps go to an overall heavier arrow.

Arne No intentions of changing to 3 under as my primary shooting style.   I like to experiment what shooting and was wondering how much point weight had on the tradjectory of the arrow and whether is was something  shooters used to adjust Point On style whether it is from 3 under or split.

Understood. Direct answer is that just point weight will not have much effect.  Over all arrow weight will (as McDave says) but it is still a very minor effect compared to arrow nock position in relation to the eye.

Have fun with the experimenting!
