Left hand bow for right hand shooter
« on: June 01, 2014, 10:48:00 PM »
Hi everyone.

I was able to get a left hand bow for a really low price. Its n aluminum left hand riser and I could not pass it up. I am a right handed shooter so I started using a thumb ring to shoot it. Used it solely for 2 months and have passed the "pain stage" using the ring. But...accuracy has really suffered. Cant seem to find a point of aim and just relying on instinctive shooting.

Is there a way to still shoot this riser using a 3 finger under with a point of aim or should I just give it up?

thank you

Doods,
You are probably right eye dominant, trying to shoot a LH bow will be tough. Try closing your right eye and forcing your left eye to take over and see how that goes.

                                                                   Good Shooting,
                                                                                  Craig

Thank you for the advice. As far as the release goes...should I use the thumb ring or the 3 finger under??

Thank you will practice closing the right eye.

Thanks again.

Thumb for that setup.  I shoot thumb, and the arrow always goes on the opposite side as compared to American archery.

I've thought about doing this to get the advantages of a shelf but I like my bows too much to add another.

Hi, no luck. Closing my right eye made it worse. Really cant see the arrow when its on the right side of the bow.

May have to go back to right handed bows and shoot 3 fingers. My attempt to shoot with thumb ring and arrow on the right seemed to have failed.

Unless I completely want to shoot instinctively, there is really no point of reference to rely on. My hats off to the turks and mongols that shoot this method.

I started that way, so I think you all are backwards.  Losing my right eye has been a setback but coming from thumb has kept me better off overall.  And yes, it's pretty much all instinctive.  With time you get used to it.  But everything is different-I still have no idea of what you guys keep going on about spine for, as we don't use that measurement.  If it's the right length and weight generally it will fly like any other of similar makeup.  My first teacher had the arrow bucket of mixed lengths, weights and heads that we had to learn to shoot accurately what was handed to us.  So shooting thumb is a lot more than just a shelf choice.

I hope I have this right. You are shooting right handed with a thumbring with a left hand riser. That should be OK.

hi, yes reddogge...my concern was how to aim since the arrow is no longer visible. slowly learning to pick a point on the riser as reference.

thank you

Reverse cant? Perhaps google thumbring shooting and watch how they shoot. Or rent "War of the Arrows".

Yes! great advice as I actually started canting the opposite way. Felt weird at times but it works.

Unfortunately, I just got back from a competition today and the organizer told me that thumb rings are not allowed in FITA competitions.I have to start shooting 3 under again for barebow with a tab.

Not good news as I discarded my right hand riser already.
