Questions about bow cant...
« on: July 08, 2014, 07:17:00 PM »
Gentlemen,
I have a few questions.  I have been battling short drawing for years.  I thought for a long time that I was properly getting into my back muscles using a rotational draw, however after having my wife video me, I discovered that I was not.  100% arm draw.  So...today I had the rare day off work.  I spent the entire day going back and forth between my bow, and watching Arne's YouTube videos.  It hit me like a load of bricks, I finally figured out how to draw rotationally and get into those back muscles, and boy what a difference it has made.  So here is the issue I have run into.  Standing square to target with no bow cant, I have no trouble with the rotational draw, hitting anchor, and shooting better than I have EVER shot.  This is all well and good in the yard, but I do most of my hunting from treestands and ground blinds.  We all know that a vertical bow is a huge hindrance in the woods, where shots have to be "manufactured" as Mr. Green says.  When I try to cant my bow even slightly the dreaded short draw and collapse rears it's ugly head.  I can try to get a video up tomorrow when my wife gets home, but in the meantime, any help would be appreciated.

As always, thanks in advance guys,

Jake

Jake....if your form is correct...its all from the waist up...your form doesn't know or care if you are bent at the waist with bow canted.  I have several videos here on TG and on the TradGang DVD of various cant angles and unorthodox positions.

Yes, I too have killed animals with no cant, but have also killed them with the bow almost horizontal and revers cant.

Contrary to what some say, bow cant does not shorten draw length, again, covered in DVD, or does not prevent proper form or back tension.

Stay after it and best of luck!!!

Jake,

I totally agree with Terry ( usually do).  IF you learn the FEEL of your back working correctly, You CAN achieve it in ANY position.  You go for the FEEL at full draw and don't let a different position affect the end position FEEL.

IF you just discovered this today, as you say, then work patiently for a few weeks on cementing in the FEEL and you will find (I think) that drawing in any posture will still get you to the correct FEEL.

Thanks so much gentlemen, I appreciate the help.  Terry,  I will rewatch your segment from bow hunters of Tradgang.

Arne, I think you're probably right, I need to give it time and develop the FEEL.  These things take time, and I have a long times worth of bad habits to unlearn.

Again, THANK YOU fellas.

Hello Gang,
I wanted to give an update.  I put your advice to practice for a couple weeks, and as you can see by the photo it has paid dividends.  Terry and Arne, thanks for your help, and thanks for everything you both do to promote our sport!!!     :clapper:
