Tips 4 shooting siting
« on: September 21, 2014, 06:24:00 PM »
I have started ground blind hunting more and more every year.  I like the shot angle plus the freedom to move around more than in a tree stand.  Plus while the deer may be suspicious of the blind they rarely spook.  Problem I am facing is that my accuracy is not as consistent while in the sitting position.  I shoot better off my knees but its difficult to stay in tha position for long.  Any tips other than just practicing more from a sitting position.

You are describing your "support unit."  It shouldn't matter whether the support unit is your feet (standing), your knees or your butt.  No matter, you are supporting the "power unit" (hands, arms, shoulders) and the "control unit" (head).

Your power unit and head should achieve the same alignments at full draw as when you are standing with no differences.  YES! it will take some practice but your shot and accuracy should remain the same.

If you've got the same sight picture and the same shoulder alignment, the shot should go in the same place. I remember a tournament where I was the last in my group to shoot, and it was the only shot where a sitting position was required. Everybody else missed. I noticed that several people were facing the target from the seat, and I wondered why they were doing that. I sat down sideways, even though the seat wasn't facing that way, so I could get in alignment with the target. Once I came to full draw, everything looked and felt the same as a regular shot, and I hit the target.

That said, you want as much to feel normal as you can when you hunt, which is why you should practice shooting broadheads, sitting, or whatever else is going to be different before you hunt.  Your mind has enough different to worry about just seeing a live animal without a whole lot else being different.

I have been shootingBH's for the last two months just not enough from the sitting position.  I think it has to do with my shoulder alignment.  Played around with my seat position this evening and consistently got a little better.

I practice shooting sitting all winter in the basement. I have no choice. I have a low ceiling.

Better practice standing in swamp water to your knees for Georgia pigs this winter.

WhileI mostly practice standing, I do a lot of roving and take some shots sitting on a random log, kneeling, or twisting around from some position. I feel a little more solid sitting or kneeling.
I think about what McDave said above, same sight picture and shoulder alignment. Seems to me it's a bit more simple and stable not adding the lower body to the setup.

Prior to the season and during it, I will always find time to shoot sitting or kneeling on the ground, sitting in a tri-pod or ladder stand, and of course while sitting in my Huntsmore chair or Waldrop Pac seat. It does not take a lot of practice time to re-establish that muscle memory but it does take some. That is part of the fun. Enjoy, "Keep'Um Sharp", and good hunting.   :campfire:
