Shooteres Mantra
« on: September 23, 2014, 07:11:00 AM »
I often her of guys using a Mantra of some sort in the shot sequence.  I don't use one on a regular basis but on occasion when I am shooting to quick will use a 3 count before I start to pull thru the release.

What are your favorites out there and why do you use it?

Tony, I don't have a mantra per se but I use a shooting thought. Close the screen door. The screen door being my string forearm and upper arm with the hinge at my body. I mentally push it closed which slows me down and allows me to engage back muscles and get a good release.

I use a clicker and my mantra is keep pulling, that way I focus entirely on the pulling and the clicker surprises me when it goes off. I am a ex compound shooter for years and it relates to squeezing a trigger "keep squeezing" until the release would go off. Works good for me.

Sometimes I practice each step of my shot by consciously thinking the shot sequence through. Sorta like this:

Stance, check
grip on bow, check
finger hook on string, check
deep breath, exhale
raise bow arm and begin rotational draw, check
breathe in and hold (as I hit anchor)
expand, expand, pull through, relax fingers
hold bow arm momentarily (follow through) while my string hand touches second anchor (shoulder)

Sometimes I practice just one in the sequence at a time.

I don't think of these things at all while stumping or hunting though.

Helps me develop a confident shot.

Just my way...
