How do you get your head out of your shot?
« on: May 19, 2016, 03:18:00 PM »
I didn't know how to title this post so I'll explain what's going on and maybe you guys can assist me.
I've shooting nothing but trad for a good 15 months. Through lurking on this site and others I've made incredible strides in my form which led to much more consistent shooting. Thank you all for that.
Here's what happens, I start a practice session, I don't think about much other than whatever I'm working on at the moment, (release, follow through, anchor etc.) I'll be shooting great and then I'll start breaking my shot sequence down, I don't know why I do this, and then my shooting starts to break down.
I'll then try to stop thinking about what I'm doing and if I can get my head out of it, I'll start shooting good again. Other times I can't get my head out of it and I have to take a break and come back later.
Is this a confidence thing? Should I just let it roll and quit thinking? I hope this makes sense. I go through this almost every practice session and it is driving me nuts.
Thanks for any thoughts

You need to trust your form and aiming process. Then shooting becomes more automatic. If you know you are aiming right, drawing right, anchoring right and releasing right then you shouldn't have to think about it too much.

Try to have only one thought in your head each time depending on what you are working on. The shooting thoughts change from time to time for me. Works for me.

Masters of the Barebow Volume 3 is an awesome DVD and goes into depth on the subject.

Rod Jenkins and Larry Yien (two shot sequence authorities) talk about their mental game in detail.

Rod does nothing but aim mentally. He engrains the shot process in at the blank bale and form training, and then when he is shooting outside of training sessions he is focusing on nothing but aiming. Allowing his subconscious mind run the shot in the background.

Larry, on the other hand allows his subconscious to control the aiming. His mental strategy during the shot is to think himself through his shot sequence one step at a time, with no conscious effort on aiming.

I shoot like Larry does. I am checking on my form, my hand position, my expansion, and my overall shot sequence throughout the entirety of the shot. My subconscious mind is placing the tip of the arrow where it needs to go and controlling the float of my sight picture automatically.

So two top end shooters (Rod and Larry) with two completely differing approaches to the mental aspect of running the shot...

I love this stuff...

Just a real quick after thought..

It sounds like you want to shoot like Rod (not much thought on your form or sequence during the shot, but more thought on aiming or just shooting) but your brain instinctively is trying to get you to shoot like Larry. (Running the sequence during the shot process)

I truly don't believe that there is a right or wrong way to do it, rather a way that better fits an individual.

You mentioned that when you start thinking about stuff in your form or sequence, your shooting accuracy suffers. Maybe try accepting that you will walk yourself through your shot sequence and allow your subconscious mind to aim and see how that goes.

Maybe the battle of your conscious mind checking in on your shot sequence while you're telling it to aim instead is the true root cause of poor accuracy. Maybe give in to walking yourself step by step through the shot and see how it goes.

Just thinking outside the box a bit.

If that doesn't work, then you'll need to get to the blank bail and engrain the shot execution so it becomes automatic, so your conscious mind never has to check in on it.

Good luck and shoot straight!

There are two ways to think about your shot: cognitively and experientially.

When you think cognitively, you think in words: you analyze things, plan things, and form judgements about things.  Cognitive thinking occurs in the past, the future, or in some abstract place out of time, but not in the present.

When you think experientially, you don't think in words.  You are aware of your surroundings and what your body is doing.  You use all of your senses to experience existence.  Experiential thinking is non-critical and occurs only in the present.

When you are learning to do something, you first have to learn it in words: cognitively.  You are awkward at first because you are constantly bouncing back and forth from an abstract thought about something to trying to perform that thought in the present.

After you have learned the movements, you begin to think experientially, rather than in words, which allows you to carry out both your thoughts and actions in the present.  This works well until you notice that the arrows are not going where you want them to, or they are going all over the place.  Then you have to switch back to cognitive thinking to figure out why this is happening, and you form a hypothesis.  You test this hypothesis by first letting your cognitive mind guide your actions, since they are new and your body hasn't learned how to do them yet.  If the hypothesis seems to be working out, you then practice the new movement enough times that your experiential mind can take over.  You can't expect to shoot very well while you're going through this problem solving process, because you're trying to switch your mind in and out of the present. This is one reason why many people prefer to solve these problems in front of a blank bale.

If you try to shoot while still cognitively thinking about the problem, of course your shooting will only get worse, because you're trying to shoot while your mind is in the future, the past, or some abstract place out of time, and you can only accurately shoot arrows in the present.

Whether you prefer to focus on the target and run the shot in the background, or vice versa, you should be thinking experientially rather than cognitively, unless there is some particular problem you are trying to solve.  In other words, in a normal shot where you are just trying to do everything the same as you already know how, you should be thinking experientially, by being aware of what you are doing, without words.  Cognitive thinking should be used before the shot, to plan it, and after the shot, to critique it, but not during the shot, unless you are learning something new that you don't know how to do experientially yet.

well guys, I think I've made some progress. After reading all of your replies, I decided to let the shot happen and just concentrate on my spot. It seems as though that is what will work for me.
Sequentially going through the process without aiming per say wasn't working out for me at all.
I've found that I stay more relaxed during practice with the aiming method.
Thanks again guys. You are the best

What's there to think about?
You get to keep what you kill.  If it were easy there would be no value in it.

Pick up a copy of "Zen and the art of Archery" and see how they get out of their head.   A LOT of repetition before even thinking about where they hit a target.  By the time they get there it is completely automatic and therefore out of the head.  (Very brief description).
