Oryx (Gemsbok)
« on: November 25, 2007, 05:01:00 PM »
There was a thread the other day that mentioned a Kudu skull or something like it
I just watched a part of a show on Outdoor Channel, about White Sands,NM and it's Oryx.
They do allow hunting.
Could this be the "kudu", that was mentioned?
Does anybody know about this hunt?

Kudu and Gemsbok are different. The animal in my avatar is a Gemsbok I shot in Afica this year. The White Sands hunt I think can be had by a draw. Check out the the New Mexico Department of Fish and Game. Some Texas game ranches probably have them as well.

Billy, There are Oryx/Gemsbok found in the White Sands Missle Range, near Alamogordo,NM. There are no Kudu. My father killed a big bull back in the late seventies. At the time, the Oryx hunt was a once in a lifetime tag. I believe that has changed. You can go to the New Mexico department of wildlife website and find information on putting in for the tag. The White Sands Missle Range is some fantastic country, definately worth investigating. Good Luck, T

A guy who posts on Iowa Whitetails drew a tag for White Sands and posted about his trophy and the hunt there.

Thanks. I'll do some checking about the draw.
I was thinkin maybe someone saw part of a skull and made the guess it was a kudu.
Mistaken i.d. and the n.m oryx could explain a skull that size in ?alabama? .
Though I'm sure there are enough 'exotic' farm hunts to have kudu in the mid-south.

Oryx on White Sands is a once in a lifetime draw unless you put in for depredation permits off of the missle range.  It is an interesting hunt, but not neccesarily a lot of fun.  (Note I gun hunted it back in 2000 - I think it was the "Small Range")  They really don't care much for bowhunters because their interest is for you to come on base, blast an oryx and leave - you are there to kill them, not hunt them.  You get three days and there will be people driving everywhere trying to get on them so it is often hard to get a clean stalk on them.  If the rules are the same, you have to bring one and only one person with you, so you have to make those arrangements.  The cost for out of state is steep, $1200 plus, if I remember correctly plus there is a fee for accessing the base as well.  I did it while I was living there so it was much cheaper.  You could be a long way to an Africa hunt for that much money!  Kudu has spiralled horns, the oryx straight and long - dagger like.  Let me know of anyother questions.
