Favorite Frog Leg Recipes?
« on: August 18, 2008, 05:45:00 PM »
My buddy and I collected 139 of these nice bullfrogs last week, and needless to say we are looking for new ways to cook them.

My favorite way to eat them is to roll in flour with salt and pepper, dip in an egg/cornmeal batter, and fry in hot oil for 8-10 mins.

Anybody got a spicy recipe for these critters?

Get you some House Autry Spicy and Hot breading mix. It is the bomb.  LOL

You can also make some tempura batter and add some Old Bay and a little cayenne pepper or Sweet Heat shake on seasoning to the batter, it is VERY good also.

  Nice Haul by the way...

I never heard of that House Autry mix, so can I find it at a regular grocery or is this a special order?

It is a regularly carried item here in most grocery stores. I don't know if it is available in Washington but you can google it and get it online.  Their chicken breader is GREAT on venison also!

I also like to add garlic and cayanne pepper (and lots of it) to the flour mixture. Nothing tastier than frog legs...

Geez, I'm jealous. Hard to find frogs in my neck of the woods anymore. I always liked to just flour and fry slowly. The meat tastes so good by itself. Where did ya get those frogs Blackhawk?

The bullfrog has migrated into Washington state in huge numbers and are destroying the native leopard frogs.  Local biologists have pretty much given up trying to save the native species.

There are numerous lakes in central Washington near the Columbia river where these frogs thrive.

In July, we harvested 176 in two nites and on this outing of two nites, we did almost as well.  Many were 12-18" long and over a pound each.    ;)

A few years ago, there was a limit of 10, now there is no limit.   :bigsmyl:

I grew up in Tennessee and hunted frogs regularly, and I believe many Washingtonians turn up their noses at eating frogs...which is just fine with me.  It just leaves more frogs for us ole country boys.    :biglaugh:

Thats a lot of frogs Lon, The great state of Kansas has a limit of 8 with 16 in possession. The fine used to be $50.00 a frog if You were over. That pile would cost a months salary down here. LOL

Try grilling them, put some garlic butter and some Tony Cacheres Creole seasoning on them it's pretty good

A limit of 8...???        You probably have more frog hunters than we do. That's a good idea on the grilling and I will look for that seasoning...thanks.

We even had 4 fellows from South Dakota out here frogging in July.

If we could just get our mule deer and elk to reproduce like the frogs, all would be right with the world.    :clapper:

Sounds like a great trade. P.M. Me Your address. My wife is a coffee drinking machine. Worked nights most of Her adult life. Tries Her best to single handedly keep Starbucks in business.

My Daughter spent a week in Seattle This summer at Her best Friends Grandmothers and talked for a month about how beautiful it was there.  bretto

Odd- bullfrogs and leopard frogs coexist here with no problems. It's not nice to fool with mother nature...

If bullfrogs are eating other frogs, does it make them taste like... frog?

I love them. The Mississippi delta is full of them, and most farm ponds in the hills have a population. We catch them by hand, one guy in front of the boat to catch, another in the rear to guide the boat to the eyes shining in the light. Fried like chicken seems to be the favorite recipe around here. I have a new pond filling with water right now, and it will have some shallows that I hope will attract them.

Jugarum!

It's a lot of fun to shoot those bullfrogs with a washer behind a target point. Kind of SPLATS them if you know what I mean. Nice mess of frogs Blackhawk!
