Alaska Brown/Grizzley hunting info?

I know that Alaska requires non-residents to hunt brown/grizzley bears with a guide but could any Alaska resident act as a guide for a non-resident or does the guide have to be a registered guide? My dream bowhunt has always been a brown bear hunt in Alaska but I doubt if I could ever come up with the 15-20 thousand to pay a guide!

isn't Canada where you have to have a giude?
I've never done it but I thought in Alaska a non-resident can hunt bear w/out a guide.

Jerry, Canada does require a guide for black bear and I'm pretty sure Alaska requires a guide for Brown bear.

Alaska requires that non-residents use the services of a registered guide or a relative within the second degree of kindred if the non-resident wants to hunt brown bear, grizzly bear, dall sheep, or mountain goats.  Registered guides are just that - the expensive option you mentioned above.  Second degree of kindred means aunt, uncle, grandparent, or anyone closer (first degree of kindred) than that.  So unless you have a close relative living in Alaska your only option is to use a registered guide.  The game regs which are available online give a much better description than what I've done here.  Hope this helps.

2-BIG, I too have the same dream.  I have been looking at an outfitter that does mostly Mountain Goat, but he does take a couple of Brown Bear hunters each year for quite a bit less than your quote.  E-mail me.

Good luck 2 Big- John is correct. (Hello John) hope all is well- I wish John wrote the regs as they would probably be less confusing. I probably spend as much time interpetating them as I do in the field (LOL) IE a nonresident must be accompanied in the field by an  Alaskan  Licenced guide or be accompanied in the field by an Alaskan resident 19 years or older who is within second degree kindred. This means he or she , if not a registerd guide , must be your: father, mother. brother,sister,son,daughter,spouse,grandparent,
grandchild,brother-or sister inlaw, son-or daughter-in law,father-or mother- inlaw, stepfather,stepmother,stepsister,stepbrother,stepson, stepdaughter, WHEW- Now im confused.PS:  I may be up for adoption for a price - or if you have a real pretty sister we may be able work something out- (just kidding) Im a happily married guy- One Eye has an interesting option, but be carefull and do your homework- (get references) + some (those could be only the satisfied friends or ? )I got slightly burned on a  Moose hunt using an outfitter and horses in Ak- Paid about  $3600 for two of us - and it was definately not the hunt advertised (If anyone has a horse hunt planned up in Ak- E mail me and I will fill you in on who to avoid) Not to say One eye doesn't have a great option- but  when you get into the thousands of $$$ - I'm not making enough to chance it. I agree with Stan 100%.  The guide that I am talking about is one that Pat Lefemine has hunted with. I have spoken with him several times on the phone about Moutain Goat and Brown Bear, and I will be booking with him for next year.

Be sure to do your homework.  If it is your dream, then make it happen.  You cannot take it with you and there may not be a tomorrow.

You mentioned brown OR grizzly hunt.  Well to be quite frank, a grizzly hunt is USUALLY MUCH MUCH cheaper then a brown bear hunt.  I know of a few outfits charging between 7k-10k for a grizzly hunt.

If you are doing somre research on your dream hunt, try looking up The Hunting Consortium. Bob Kearn runs this outfit and he is a booking agent and has some good Brown Bear hunts in Russia for much cheaper than Alaskan hunts and the sucess rates have been good. I am not sure what they think about bow hunters, so you will have to enquire.

I have a close friend who went to Russia several years ago, and he shot a real dandy (rifle hunting).  He went in the same groups as Gary Bogner, and I know Gary goes there bowhunting.  I agree that you can go to Russia cheaper than Alaska, but you want to be doubly careful with your research.  I will do some inquiring.

We have gone to Russia for my son's hockey, and it is a very "interesting" country to visit.
