Tiwi Islands Water Buffalo Adventure
« on: July 09, 2006, 01:50:00 PM »
Dale Karch and I just returned from OZ. Had a great hunt with Billy Baker. We both shot 2 bulls on video. Bill's superior knowledge of the terrain, buffalo and stalking skills put us into bulls constantly. I spent most of my time on video, but here are a few photos.

Dale's first bull

Packing Dale's bull out. This bull was shot 3 miles from the truck. The meat was packed out and given to the Tiwi people.

Some days we took a nap near wallows.

Billy and Dale planning a stalk. I learned a bunch about stalking from Billy on this hunt.

Dale and Billy on the stalk part 1. Part 2 is done in socks.

Billy and I with one of the bulls I was lucky to get. This was an old bull well past his prime. His teeth were nearly gone. You will definitly need a hydration system for this hunt. Both the platypus and camelback systems worked well. My Bison Gear pack worked great for the hunt too.

The local Tiwi people performed a corroboree for us.

This is a Tiwi Pukamani pole. I hope to return soon to hunt with Billy on Melville island.

Congrats with the fine result !

I'm going after buff too next june with my DAS (Hotspur Lodge with Andrew as a guide) and what I would like to know is what kind of set up you were shooting and how the penetration was. I talked to David so I know you used a Widow longbow and Grizzly Sticks (Safari). But please tell the specifics (drawweight at which drawlength - weight of arrows - what broadhead - what was the speed of the setup - amount of penetration and so forth)

Thanks
Torben from Denmark

PS. Try to look at Bowsite - there is a story (Australian buff hunt - recap) where the guide got badly hurt by a wounded buff in OZ.

Billy just told me yesterday that you guys had a really good hunt and you are right about learning stalking from him.  His stalking skills alone would almost make the trip worth it just to learn!! Glad to see you are back safe and had fun.  Joseph

I've been waiting to see this thread Denny. Top pics mate.

Well done on the Buff, Bill told me you two had a blast. He spoke very high of you both. And as you would well know, Mr Baker is the KING of the "Silent Sock Shuffle"!

He's also the type of fella that, when he talks you listen.
