Hog hunting set up
« on: May 31, 2007, 10:01:00 PM »
I'm planning on going on a hog hunt this summer. I have a 50 pound longbow with about 380 grain arrows and a 45 pound recurve with about 500 grain arrows. Which set up do you guys think would do a better job on a hog.

I'm planning on shooting magnus II 100 grain 2 blade broadheads with it. I was thinking about going in south carolina at bostick plantation or somewhere in georgia. Me and a couple of my friends are sophmores in high school and just looking for a fairly cheap summer trip. Public land would also work out nice for us but i haven't been able to find any information on any.

VinnieB -- Before you book any hunt, ask the outfitter for some referrences and call those references and try to get the straight skinny on the place before you plunk down any money.  The ads for a lot of places make them sound wonderful, not all live up to what they promise.  Look for a place that specializes in bowhunting.  I have hunted hogs with 15 different outfits in Texas and Oklahoma in the last few years.  Some were outstanding, some okay and a couple fooled me and were real rip-offs.

In any event, spend a little time checking the outfits out and have a great hunt.  I must warn you at your tender young age, hog hunting is adictive and may well result in a life long afflection of constant day dreaming about your next chance to chase whem with stick and string.

Cheers from Alaska

Thanks for the advice i'm now also looking into wilderness hunting lodge in tennessee now that i saw i get a 100$ discount for being sixteen. I just read a article that some other people posted about hunting there on this site and they seemed pretty happy with it, but i'll keep looking around.

there are plenty of state game areas in georgia to hog hunt ft stewart a military base has a lot of hogs and the prices there for liscences are pretty reasonable if you are going to do it by yourself

there are plenty of people on here that will help you find good locations and lots of help setting up your bow for them.

personally I would go with a 125 or the 145 grain magnus 2 blade but that is my personal opinion on that

Check into Bostick before you book...I've heard some negative comments about it from friends who have gone there....

yea it is pretty lite they are 2013 xx75 aluminum arrows. i've had a terrible time finding arrows that flew right and this is the only combination i could come up with. I would like to get my arrows to a weight around 500 grains.

Vinnie,  Just checked on Eastons spine chart and this is some info for thought.  2 listings for xx75 2013... first one..spine of ..610 @261 gr @29" shaft  second one.. spine of .540 @270 gr @29"  if you go by the second one then a 2016 has a spine of .531 (just a tad stiffer) @ 307 gr @ 29" shaft.  The notch stiffer shafter my work better with Broadheads. It may also give you the added stiffness needed to go up in point weight.

I shot a 2016 @ 28" out of a longbow pulling 45# w/150gr up front and they seemed to fly pretty well.

I would hunt with the 500 grain arrow set up if I were you.  Two holes are always better than one, and I would bet my pay check that the 45# bow will out penetrate the 50# with your arrow choices.

Apex is right,, deffinatley get that arrow weight up buddy,, shoot 550 to 600 at 50#'s and 450 to 500 for 45#'s.. I have shot 550 grains out of a 45# recurve and it did an excellent job. Try playing with some arrows a little bit more.JB

Vinnie B. Avoid Bostic at all costs. As for equipment either is adequate for pigs. Shoot wichever you most accurate with. Perfect arrow flight is more imporatant than arrow weight. A 400gr arrow flying like a dart will outpenetrate a 500gr arrow that is fishtailing its way to the target.

Easton 2114 or 2016 at your arrow length should fly well with 125 grain broad heads. I'm shooting a 50lb longbow with 29 inch 2114's and a 125 grain broadhead.I weighted them with styrofoam and got the weight up to 515 grains. Without the styrofoam they weigh in at about 480 grains. These will do the trick on whitetail deer and small to mid size hogs if you do your part with shot placement and get inside 20 yards of the target. Deer do not pose the penetration problem that the hogs do. Good luck.
