Stalked??
« on: July 27, 2007, 09:34:00 AM »
Just curious if this has happened to any of you?? First off, I'm hunting in Suriname, South America...in the Amazon rainforests. I was hunting along the edge of a creek about a week ago, in a triple canopy area, which means very little light during the day. Hunting for deer/wild hogs...I heard somethig to my right and turned, and startled myself and a young (100lbs)jaguar...I think both our hearts skipped a beat. A short while later, I turned around, as I "kinda felt" something was there and that same young jaguar was about 20 meters behind me!! Was he stalking me or just a curious jaguar? I'll never know, but I'm lieng if I say it didn't make me real nervous.

No, but I WISH it could happen to me...I bet not many of us have made it to S America to hunt in the jungle...but I would love to.

A good friend took a jaguar on the ground, calling it up, in the Matto Grosso region..it was a monster..shot it at 4 yards with a Schafer Silvertip...really cool.

Once while elk hunting I was standing in a burned out ponderosa stump big enough to stand inside of..calling elk...and a big female mountain lion came stalking up at 10 yards, looking for that cow elk. It was pretty exciting and the hair on the back of my neck rose up I can tell ya!

Ray,
A mountain lion at 10 yards!! Yeah that would raise some hairs. Congrats on the big cat.

Taking a jaguar with a bow is an awesome experience/thrill. They are huge, and to see them up close and put your hands on them make you appreciate what they could do. Actually I am glad I saw this one, as it tells me there must be game in the area. Come on down to Suriname, I'll put you on jaguar, tapir, water buffalo, maybe even a baboon if you're lucky. A canoe will take you to some pretty remote areas here.

On my first African Hunt I stalked a warthog - and had seperated from my PH who circled the bush the other way around to maybe send the warthog a little in my direction.
After some time I decided the hog is gone and got into a leisure mood, stood there on a small opening and just waited for the return of my PH.
The moment he came to the opening and we joined the LEOPARD jumped out of the bush 20yrds. behind us and made his way through the weeds along a small river! It was in the middle of the day and the Leopard was on the ground, hiding at the corner of that opening. I am convinced he had "stalked" me when I stalked the warthog. I had not thought much about it THEN but today I get a chilling feeling every time I remember this very special event    :scared:

I guess I qualify to answer your question with: YES!

BTW: Does this mean we are looking good    or just fat enough   ;)

Had a similar experience in Idaho one year. Calling elk and had a funny feeling. Turned and was facing a mtn.lion at about 10-12 yards. Yes that will make the hair on your neck stand up.

Falk, I was hoping to hear something similar with a leopard, these instances are interesting to me. Yours seems chilling for sure...sorry I reminded you of it. In answer to your question, it would be the later for me...or maybe this guy just got wind of my Bow Hush and Hush Puppies??

G'day Falk, I seem to remember reading something like that in our (Australian) magazine, Archery Action... Did you write a story for them a few years ago?

I have found Mt. Lion tracks on top of mine several times while hunting here in Montana, it does make one wonder.  I would be worried about Jaguars, they have a habit of eating people!  Shooting a Jaguar would be really cool to but, I guess it wouldn't be to hard getting it over the border considering how porus it is but I think taxidermy might be a problem!    :bigsmyl:  Joseph

Hi Ben!
Sorry, but the article you mentioned was definately not by me. Even though my PH permanetly moved to Western Australia about 1 1/2yrs. ago, I don't think he would have had the time to do so himself - at least he never told me about it.
I forgot to mention in my little "story" that I ran into some Impala - and their snorting etc. made me belive I had no more chance to get close to the Warthog again ...

Moengo,
no problem! I am "proud" I survived and can tell about it  ;)

Joseph- All I've heard now about Mt. Lions makes me think they are even more to worry about. The jaguar has such an advantage with camo, trees and usally poor lighting and they are just so darn big that I would rather not have one walking along behind me. You are right, no problem to get him out but the taxidermist better be a good friend...or tan the hide yourself.

In 1995 while hunting  out in far sth west Queensland I had followed a set of feral dog tracks out to a semi dried swampy paddock looking for pigs and about 20 minutes from sunset turned back as I had around an hour walk back to camp and followed the same path back the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and an uneasy feeling hit me , I turned around and about 15 yards behind me was a large feral dog ,[ German Shepard cross ] crouched low preparing to attack . I yelled shot after the dog and dont mind saying hurried back in fear back to camp . Lesson hunt with a mate I can run faster than . regards Jacko

I was in the Amazon doing the same thing but we added Tapir to our list as well as Caiman.  After no good shots in 7 days I decided to leave my bow in camp as we went out to spear some fish at night.  The guide started calling like a young caiman and got a reply.  We saw the eyes of a medium size at the back of the lake.  We were able to paddle withing striking distance of the caiman and speared the 8 foot caiman.  The spear snapped in two just behind the head.  The caiman just sunk to the bottom.  Not dead just stunned.  You can hear his croaking on the bottom of the lake.  What to do now.  The guide said forget it.  I was able to reach both arms over the bow of the boat and grabbed the caiman around the head and bring it in the boat.  While on an earlier float that week we did float upon a jaguar walking the bank 10 feet away. By the time I was able to turn to my right side for a shot it climbed the bank. We did 90% of our hunting at night floating down the rivers.  I do not know how to add pics.  I have some great ones.  I was able to bring back a palm bow that the guide made during the week trip.  With just a machete. I hope to one day remember to get back from Tim Mullins at Acadian Woods.

It's an interesting feeling when you are in a position that causes you to realize that at that particular moment, you may not be at the very top of the food chain, but somewhere in the middle....  Those who have been there know what a "humbling" feeling it really is.  Yet sometimes the full impact catces up with you some time later.  It's one thing to be on the angry end of a critter that you just sent an arrow into....  but quite different when you realize something could actually be interested in eating you.  Gets the old blood pumping in my veins!

closest we've come here in Ca to the proverbial "big kitty" was rifle hunting for hogs some years ago, stumbled on a fresh kill, pug marks all round, and even a piece of fresh fawn's hide. My wife decided to use the "facilities" and began walking away without her rifle.  She knows better now!  the piece of hide still had damp blood on it, and I figure the cat was within a 200yd radius.
