wolverienes?

im not shure if the count as dangerous i dont think there have been enough encounters to know, there awfuly shy.  i was bunny hunting early this spring, starting to get dark when i saw what i thought was a land otter slithering away so i chased it, otters have nice fur. i saw a head and neck looking at me 25 yards or so. the shot hit just under the chin and passed through.  i went in after it, found my arow still clean white feathers and wrap. no blood anywhere.  but the tracks where most definatly not otter, i suspected it could be a wolverine but not to shure, dont see too much sign. i came back every day for a week hunting bunnys and lookin for it and i steped on it under the snow at least 200 yards from the sight. it had a big 3 blade hole under his chin.  he will make a nice quiver.
     i was wondering if any one had heard of one being taken by a bow of anykind?

I haven't heard of anyone shooting a wolverine with a bow but I do know two buddies that shot wolverines with guns. First I will just say that you are one lucky man for two reasons. FIRST: 99% of people(even the outdoor type) will never see a wolverine in the wild in their lifetime.  Biologist have to use planes/helicopters just to do track studies(most of the time they never see the animal. SECOND: If that wolverine would have still been where you shot him when you got there you would have been up S!$T Creek without a paddle!!  They are the wildest animal in North America.  My first buddy was caribou hunting and saw a wolverine several hundred yards out so he tried to circle around and when he got in the area he saw the wolverine about 50 yards and closing fast and he was not happy.  He started sending rounds at him and finally got him at about the 20 yard mark.  The second buddy was goat hunting out of Valdez and was sitting in camp with his partner when a wolverine busted into camp and went for his buddy.  He had his gun close and shot it point blank.  Both were made into full mounts.  You are very, very lucky to get that chance and Im glad you made a good shot when it counted.>>>----AKbearb8---->

I have seen a grand total of one in all of my wanderings.  Over in the Shotgun Hills.  That guy that makes the Silvertip bows shot one a while back but that is the only arrow killed one I have heard of.

I try to trap them up here (north west Alaska).  I've never heard of anyone getting one with a bow.  
Also, I haven't seen one.... yet.  I put 3000-4000 miles a year on my snow machine, and I hope to see one someday.  I had some really close encounters (fresh tracks, but ran out of time).  
You are a fortunate person shooting one with a bow.  If I were you, I would get it mounted on a moose shed.

I saw one in an ad in TBH that a guy shot with a curve.Ill try to find it.It was in a back issue.They may be the ultimate animal.Congrats.

the hide was ok.  there was some fur missing on his face from frostbite.  i tanned it so i could make a quiver.

In my thirty years in AK I have only seen four of them. One I trapped. The others were makin tracks in a rather hasty fashion.

I put a couple thousand miles a week on the Tractor through some pretty wild country here in AK. "Cool Critter Sightings" are a frequent topic amongst the truckers along the Dalton.

About once a year one of us gets lucky enough to sight the wolverines that frequently cross the trail. Tracks a plenty, but they are like ghosts and more shy than any other critter out there.

Ought to make one heck of a quiver!!

A friend of mine shot one with a recurve (Hummingbird I think) a couple of years ago on a combo moose/caribou hunt in Alaska.  He had a full body mount done.

I mouse sqeaked one into 15 yards will caribou hunting in the NWT. I didn't have a tag so I took pictures. Two years later while back in the NWT I called one into 60 yards. I had a tag this time but didn't take the shot. Dave Windauer was the person that killed the wolverine and Matt Riley took a wolf on the same trip!

Well I am impressed at how many people have taken one with a bow. At least around here even just trapping one is a trophy, I don't even personally know anyone that has taken one with a rifle and if people heard that you had shot one with a traditional bow they would think you were just plain nuts!

I bought a tag while in the NWT on a caribou hunt but never saw one. I had heard stories like Inrut's where people had opportunities but no tag is the reason.

 While on a Mt goat hunt in BC a couple of years ago we were sitting out a rain day in the tent when the assistant guide yelled there's a wolverine coming into camp. By the time the outfitter and I got out of our tent it had high tailed it back the way it came. Never got to see it.

 The outfitter I hunted with in Alaska this year had a couple mounted in his house as well as hides hanging from his stair case. He traps as well as hunts so I'm not sure what method he used to take them.

I saw two mating in a bush 2 summers ago out in Ugashik, wolverine sex is well interesting and kinda scary... they are loud critters.  A guy who lives there has had traps out for them for a number of years and still hasn't caught one.
