Russian Brown Bear article in TBM...
« on: July 12, 2012, 08:20:00 AM »
A few years back and maybe more there was a great article in TBM about a group of guys that went to Russia on a brown bear hunt. It might've been a very old article and then reprinted ,but I have looked for it and looked for it with no luck. Anybody remember what I'm talking about ? Maybe know what issue it's in ?

I thought bow hunting was not allowed in Russia?

Archery / Bow Hunting in Russia

Currently, Russian hunting regulations don’t allow bow hunting. However, many former Soviet Union republics do.

Man, this was an old article. Like a 1996 issue. Was written by Dick Robertson, I believe.

was that the one that Doug Borland was pretty much setting up the trips from America to Eurasia for these hunts?  If not mistaken, he is the guy that opened the door for bowhunters there and was instrumental in making it not only affordable but safe for all participants.

I believe so, Brock. I remember the article vividly as one of the guys was a huge Rasputin looking guy who was shooting a selfbow that was like 80 lb at like 20".

"Longbows in the Far North: An Archer's Adventures in Alaska and Siberia" by E. Donnall Thomas Jr. is about, well (as the title suggests), longbow hunting Alaska and Russia.  Not a bad read.  Available for e-readers as well.
