1953-1954 Polar LB RH 51#
« on: March 03, 2008, 07:03:00 PM »
I just got this one Sunday, does anybody need one for their collection? I have not strung this one up but my friend has and he made a flemish dacron string for it and he added a tennis raquet grip to it. I am not sure if the leather grip is under the Wilson wrap. I looked at a Collecter web site to find what year it is and it looks like this one is a 1953 or 1954. standing bear sticker, strait limbs,1953 patent, RH, not double shelf.

That would be a 1954.  Bear had the standing Bear sticker from '54 through mid to late '56.  Before that it was a small running bear.
I think the '54 was offerred in two lengths, 64" and 68"... which is this one?
No double shelf?  That's the same way my '55 Cub is.

String her up and shoot her some!!  Then let me know (I'm missing an early Polar in hunting weight)

It's dark out now, maybe I will string it up tomorrow. I have 8 "modern" recurve bows all are 49-52 lbs @28". this bow is 66" overall length unstrung. A bow like this one should belong to someone that would really appreciate it, I won it at the TBOF spring shoot (raffle) yesterday, it looks out of place in my bow rack.

Do you have a price in mind?  The 54# 1955 Cub that I was going to fix up just developed another crack, so it is going on the wall, and I will be looking for a replacement.  My wife grew up next door to Grayling, so I've got a fondness for old straight limb Bear bows-they are the same era as her!:-)  PM me if you want.  Thanks.

Ron, where's the crack in your Cub?  The vast majority of the mid 50's bows I've been shooting have developed a crack along the limbs this winter.  It's probably the first winter they've been shot in 40+ years and by this time you know the wood is nice and dry.  A little superglue and they'll be fine for another 50  :)

Jeremy, I did not get to shoot the LB today, it's raining here in the Sunshine state.

Ron,I didn't have a price in mind, Jeremy seemed to have a slight interest in it in his post on the 3rd, so I should give him the first chance at it. If he does not then would you have anything interesting to trade? I'm not 100% sure but I think these bows sell for $75-$125.

Jeremy,
The crack goes the laminations like this

and another one developed an inch away in the same direction.  It makes me afraid that it will want to come apart in that location, although it is fun to shoot.  I have a 60# Cub that is in really great shape, but it is a bit heavier than I like.

Robert,
I don't have much in the way of modern stuff, but I do have a 50# Ben Pearson Colt recurve.  I can take pictures if you might be interested in it, and Jeremy decides against the Polar.  Let me know if you would like some pics if something doesn't happen with Jeremy.

Remember, tomorrow is Fred Bear's birthday-March 5, 1902.  Shoot a Bear bow in his honor!
