HELP!!! Board Bow Twist
« on: December 02, 2007, 10:21:00 AM »
I am working on a board bow as a Christmas present. I am at the tiller stage and have developed twist in the end of bow bow? When I flex it, one end flares out to the right , one to the left! Is there any way to fix this? What caused this? Bad tillering, a bad board......?

Thanks!

Here is where to start. Put your bow under your chin and sight down the limbs one at a time. Look for an area on the limb edge that swells slightly in it's taper to the tip. This swell, no matter how small will make the limb twist or wander to the side.

Next you want to check the wood depth on the sides of the limb to make sure you didn't leave a thicker spot on one side of the limb. This will cause a twist.

If the limb twist is counter clockwise you can can scrape a little of the clock wise or strong side and have some correction. This works with some bows and doesn't have much effect on others.

I have found some bows just don't respond well to wood removal corrections.

I have also found that things like minor propeller will pull themselves out during the break in period.

I went out and scraped wood off the side with lees bend, and its still twisted? Could it just be the grain was not straight enough?

Can you post pics? That will help to see what you are referring to.    Pat
