bowdoc, that might explain the pointed end, to keep it from rotating, and the consistency between mine and Bob's. I don't understand why the hole would go all the way through, though. Seems like that would complicate things, unless maybe it was so it could be kept on a string...

Maybe the bottom piece, held with toes, sandstone for extra friction, tapered for holding a stick in place... Much speculation on my part.
