Archery Gadgets From Days Gone By
« on: November 21, 2008, 02:29:00 PM »
If you remember this one, you're showing your age.   :saywhat:   "The Shaft Spider" tracking device. I believe this was introduced around 1965/1966. I just found two of them in my old archery box. They were inserted into a fiberglass or aluminum arrow just behind the hunting tip. A small hold was drilled near the nock end and the fine web like string was fed out thru the hole and attached to the bow string. As the add reads: "The trail starts at your finger tips". They were the talk of the town back in the day, but like alot of archery gadgets they didn't blossom. My wife actually shot a deer with one of these spider shaft arrows back in the late 1960's. Unfortunately, she hit it square in the shoulder knuckle and never recovered the deer, but was able to follow the spider line and retrieve her arrow. Just some old archery history I thought you might enjoy.....Mike

I don't remember when they first showed up but they were around in the seventies- maybe even into the early eighties. Somewhere I have an old aluminum arrow or two with tge hole up around the nock. Hadn't thought of those in a while.

I think the Spider Shaft was the best tracking device. There were no string hang-ups to deflect arrow flight. It held 1800 ft of thread. They did not have to be tied from arrow to bow, just put the arrow on the rest and shoot. The velcro on the arrow and the bow would grab and you had a trail. We used them in the 80s for bear hunting and they worked perfectly. I also used it on a whitetail hunt in 1995. Didn't need it as my buck dropped in sight, but again it worked very well.

Ron is right on i used one in '74 to kill a bear and it worked very good.
The good part was if the string broke it would be picked up on grass or twigs and keep paying out.
still have two in the package

Remember them. Never used one, but seemed like a good idea at the time.

The most important part of your hunting setup is the broadhead.  The rest is just the delivery system.
