To re-finish a '61 Grizzly,,,,
« on: February 22, 2009, 12:14:00 AM »
should I sand off what's left of the paint and just clear finish it, or try to get it close to original "Factory" camo?

You can see the stress through the paint.

Hey buddy, from what I understand   :scared:  you may just find a gorgeous figured bow under that paint. But until you strip it   you will not know. I guess the worst case scenario is you repaint it, afterwards.

Hopefully Doc will chime in, with his advice

This one has been partly sanded already. She was pretty rough. The limbs are brown glass with some stress you can see through the paint. The riser is all Maple. Nothin fancy, but I'm not fancy either. I'll see better once I sand it all off. I'm going to be carefull around the decals in case I decide to repaint, they are in "ok" condition

We were typing (pecking) at the same time Rich. Part of the riser has already been sanded to bare wood, so that's what I'm doin the rest of the way.

Kenny if you are wanting to strip off the factory camo maybe give 100 grit sandpaper a try.Fact is,I use 100 grit on everything until I start spraying.
I strip the riser and limbs both with 100 grit sandpaper. The 100 is a little roughter and takes a bit more finsih to fill the sanding marks but gives a great surface for the new finish to stick to...Don't forget ther will be new transfers here soon.bd
