Kodiak Special '57 or '58 ?
« on: March 14, 2009, 02:35:00 AM »
Hello all, I've been away for a while and I'm glad to be back.

There was a 65# Kodiak Special that sold last evening on the auction site that was listed as a 1958 but it looked more like a '57 to me. I was at work when the auction ended but I bid it up a little before I left. It brought a little over $350.00, I thought it would go pretty high but I didn't think it would bring quite that much.

So what say the experts, '57 or '58?
Item number: 170308805583

BTW I'm still looking for a '58 Cub and Kodiak Special if any one has an extra laying around.

Thanks!
Bob

That was a 57 kodiak Special and in pretty good shape.  Those heavyweights sell well.

Welcome back Bob,  I've wondered where you have been.  Hope all is well with you and your family.

Bob T - You can see the difference between the 1957 and 1958 Kodiak Specials in the first photograph on this thread that is about Kodiak Specials. Just looking at the sight window will tell you the year of the bow in the auction is 1957.

I notice the 55 and 56 Kodiak Specials in the picture appear to have a single shelf compared to the 55 Kodiak with the double shelf. How much more special were the specials compared to the regular Kodiak given the same weight and length or close to each other?

Here's another tough one: how would you compare these 50's Bear Bows to something like a Martin Savannah or Vision longbow? How different? More power pound for pound? Accurate?? Excuse a newbie trying to catch up on Fred Bear history and by the way, maybe get one of these Bears just to get the feel of that history.

Thanks for your patience
