I have my Dad's bow here to clean -up a little for him so he can start shooting it again. I plan to set a ladder stand for him close to his house so he can bow-kill his first deer in a long time.....

Anyway he can't remember the exact year he bought it. It's a Zebra wood/brown glass, 58", 47# Grizzly #5P6406...any help would be great, thanx

Sounds like the bow is a 1965 model.

I agree with Johnny, Rick and BowDoc...1965.

Curt, from 1965 through 1969 all Bear bows had the first digit of the SN as the last number of the year it was made between '65 & '69. that period is the easiest to date old Bear bows.

Tkae care of your dad. If you have to, go catch an 8 point and tie his head to a tree within range of the ladder stand.

Curt actually in 1964 1965 both bows were the same.However many 1964's became 1965's do to overstock.The bows were built first and then issued a serial number.The only real way to tell the difference between a true 1964 and a true 1965 Grizzly no matter what the serial number is.Would be 1964 Grizzly's have redish brown and white paper micarta tip overlays...1965 Grizzly's have redish brown and white fiberglass tip overlays.If you could load a couple tight pics of the tips it would sure help.bd

As I was taking the close-up pix I noticed both overlays had some separation....

I was born in '64 and he thought it was either that year or the next...it would be kinda cool if was from the year I was born!

I'd luv to find the same bow in a lefty....

Hey Bowdoc- that looks like those caramel colored paper micarta tips like the ones on the 60# LH Grizz I sent to Tom. '65 Sounds right. Nice bow Curt and a great thing to do for your Dad. GY

As bodoc said "paper micarta=64" so I think it is a 64 Curt. Looks like paper micarta to me on the tips. bodoc should be along to tell you how to fix the seperations.

I would recommend thin super glue wicked into the separations and spring clamps till set. Then lightly sand and seal the tips with truoil. I think the finish being dinged up on the tips has allowed moisture to get in and loosen the micarta overlays.

But the good Dr should be along soon to tell you how to do it right.

yap 1964 she has paper tip overlays even though the serial number says 1965 it very well may have been on a rack at the factory in late 1964 or early 1965 and then shipped to a dealer as a 1965 hence the serial number begaining with 5.You might want to hold her tip down and soak the heck out of those overlays with super glue and then put one of those rubber coated squeeze clamps on it they only have 1-3 pounds of presure and work good for tips.Sand off the excess glue and she should be good for another 46 years...another thing those are just super good shooting bows too.bd

Those Zebra wood Grizzlys are sweet! My buddy has one thats 45lbs, I've been trying to get it from him! Best with the bow! Steve

Doc, So you're saying soak the whole tip in Super glue? Any certain kind? Something I can get locally?

It really is a great shooting bow. Last time dad shot it with Cade and I at a 3D, I was amazed by it's performance.....I'd luv to find a 50-55# lefty to match Dad's...

Curt do you have a Grainger Supply near you ? Yes just soak the overlay side of the tip with super glue.The paper micarta will soak up a bit of the glue and kind of add strength to the overlay helps keep it from cracking.bd

Yes, Loctite 420 is the stuff and available at Grainger - see bd's Restoration 101 thread. This is an industrial quality super thin (wicking) grade of SG. It cost about $20 for a 1 oz bottle. It will act as a sealer for the wood as well as attaching and hardening the tip overlays.
