Alright Cody,here is one of the oddest looking bows I have ever seen.It was made by a Michigan bowyer back in the 1950's by the name of Jim Hodek.He was from Traverse City.

 I've also got a couple other Hodek made bows but this one is by far the wildest looking one of the bunch.If i decide to part with it I'll let you know.

John if I am right that looks like a longbow with wood over lays on the nocks...... How cool I love that riser as well....

John - That is the most unusual looking Hodek bow I have ever seen. I'd love to know the story behind that design. I'm sure it was a shootable design, but would have to guess that it was a prank rather than a serious design.  

For those who don't know, Jim was a serious bowyer and most of his designs look far more traditional than the unusual design that John posted...

These Hodek bows are from the original Grumley Collection and clearly illustrate that Jim Hodek was a legitimate bowyer, not just a prankster.

Mwmwmb those are rare bows... the last one I seen sold for more then $500..

Mickey - Emil Pikula was the owner of Pikula Machine Products in Cleveland, Ohio. A small part of his business was archery tackle, bows, broadheads and such. In Ohio and surrounding states he was a fairly well known name back in the 40s and 50s but not many guys know of him today. A small outfit as far as his archery products. Back in those days, many people with a manufacturing business, dabbled in making archery products. Sort of like Traditional Archery is today with dozens of people with a manufacturing business or background getting into some area of the archery business, bows, broadheads, etc.

Cody - How long ago did you see a Pikula sell for that much?

last year at Kzoo... I thinkin it was around $450to $500... why was that to much for that bow ?...

That is far more that I would care to spend for one. But as with all collectibles, there are many specialists who are willing to pay a significant premium for a specific item they are looking for. An example is I would probably pay more for a specific Grumley bow that I was looking for than 99 percent of the other bow collectors who aren't that interested in Grumleys.

were all of his designs strange? what is the intention of this design?

Mickey - I believe most of Hodek are a very conventional design for the period they were made. This can be confirmed with his bows in the display case. I don't know his intention of the wild design that John has, but if I had to guess, I'd say he was just goofing off to make an unusual bow. Maybe John knows the real story behind the bow.

It appears to me that the bow may have two separate grips, a high and low grip. A cool bow, whatever the story is behind it.

Wade and everyone else reading this.I agree with you Wade,I'm sure Jim built the bow more as a novelty than a serious shooter.I understand Jim was a remarkable woodworker so maybe he was just showing off.I got the bow from a gentleman up in northern Michigan.It was initially made by Jim and given to his brother as they were friends.His brother owned an archery shop back in the day.The bow has some very faded writing on it stating it was made for his friend.The other two Hodek bows I have are of a slightly more traditional design and are both signed by Hodek.This one is not but I told by the recipients brother that it was made by Jim.It has 50's era woven green glass on the back.I imagine it is shootable but I doubt that it would be a very pleasant experience with those big tips.There is only one grip on it and there is an arrow shelf for a right-hand shooter.I didn't realize I had the bow upside-down in one of the photos.You can barely make out a small piece of leather as a strike plate in the one photo.Probably the oddest bow I will ever see.

Don't think the Pikula bow really sold at the Kalamazoo show, I remember the owner picking it back up on Sunday from Lon's table of bows that he sells for guy's that drop off them for the weekend, I was set up next to Lonnie so I was keeping an eye on it. But it was for sale.at a high price
