Hey guys,I would really appreciate some help with the description on this 46" from some of you that know about the different woods and bow construction. This bow has always been very striking to look at and was picked as the Best one of the bunch by one of the most respected authorities that has ever viewed this collection in it's entirety...(my son, 21 year old art student).

After lookig at these pics while doing the last post it finally struck me that besides the green color(has it been stained green or is it a natural color?)the growth rings were showing between the lamination lines. Did Mr. Stewart use end cuts from a very tight grained block of wood for the 21 laminations and if so, is that the center(heart) of the tree right in the grip?

Do any of you guy's have any lams. like these on a bow? Thanks for any help on this getting this bows description more complete. Greg

Greg- great acquisition. Bill Stewart was the "MAN" who created most of the most collectible Bears. Owen Jeffery told me that Fred took a look at the "multi-cam" and said " what the hell is that?" Nonetheless, he was a powerhouse of bow building and you are a lucky and forward looking collector to pick these up. Congratulations,     Grant

Tim Thanks alot, it must be phenolic. I'll add it to the description, that sounds much better than "green stained mystery wood ". I would have swore that was wood grain.

Grant  Thanks for the story straight from Owen Jeffery, great information! And your kind words. "Lucky" is so right. Lucky to have the best of friends to help feed my addiction.

Nothing from 1967... but 67 1/2 makes up for it

Ah yes,the compass in the riser.Be still my beating heart.I don't feel so crazy now that Mr. Stewart was willing to try it out.

Greg - Yet another unusual Exp. Thanks so much for sharing these treasures.

John - Now that you have evidence that even Bear's R&D put a compass in the riser, we can probably look forward to seeing a photograph of all of your shooter bows with a compass in them.

Wade-Yes I think a compass in my shooters is a possibility. All I need to do is find a few more compasses. No one said this would be easy.Been using 'em in gloves lately.

The 67 1/2 catalog describes the Kodiak Hunter as a "broad limbed brute". I love the Shedua in this one.

What a fantastic treasure trove of bows. Congrats many times over. As others have said keep the pics coming. All very interesting and learing every day as this thread grows. Had to reply to the 67 1/2  camo with the compass. WOW! I can't even imagine how a "regular" work day was at Bear. Are these bows something built during the work day or after hours / lunchtime? Did the bowyers there at Bear have a sense of what they were doing as it relates to the history of archery & bowhunting I wonder??? Just beautiful bows all around and please keep them coming!!!

It appears to have grain because Phenolic is just layers of fabric impregnated with epoxy and cured under heat and pressure, thus it does have layers which will look like the grain of wood.  I'm not 100% sure it is indeed Phenolic, but that would be my uneducated guess.    :D

Greg, the wood in that Hunter is incredible-a fella could pass hours in a stand just gazing into the grain of that thing. I'm noy really a fan of the Kodiak Hunter (though my son loves it) but the wood Stewart used at Bear elevates any design to classic status,IMO. Just beautiful.

jcar315  Thanks for the congrats. I would bet a regular work day with Bill Stewart in the R&D department was pretty interesting. Between Fred Bears ideas and Bills amazing skills in the shop and as a bowyer it must have been a great time.   I have worked in an R&D type position and know how nice it is to get all the best tools and especially materials, its nothing like working in regular production. With the right boss (Fred Bear) it's probably kinda of like getting paid to be an artist. I hope that we get to hear some more real stories like the one Grant told about Owen Jeffrys being there when the Wavy limb(Multi-Cam) was shown to the boss.

Grant I couldn't agree more!

Cody  The Unknowns are next

Tim   Thanks for the knowledge! Phenolic seems to be like Mikarta?

Without any silkscreans or a box to go off I'm not positive but I think this one belongs here. What you guys think?

1967 1/2 Kodiak Hunter EXP./Proto? 58" 43#
Bubinga? with brown glass

All three for a comparison

What do you think? Is it Bubinga and does it belong here with the 67 1/2's? Greg

Greg,

Without a doubt the bottom bow belongs in the photograph with the 67 1/2s.

Belly side of the sight window had a dogleg magnum look to it.

Looks like bubinga to me.
