Cleaning string
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:47:00 PM »
Not sure if you clean old string or just throw it out and replace it, but my 57 Polar has a flemish twist string that looks in excellent condition, just caked in old wax with lost of grime caked into the wax.  Other than the grime, it looks excellent.  Didn't know if there was a way to clean it, or do you just throw it out and start with new?
Thanks

I've never cleaned a string in 43 years but I guess you could heat it with a hair dryer (off of the bow) to melt the bees wax and rub it briskly with a rag.  Reapply bees wax.

Laquer thinner will cut the wax. But you lose the wax inside the twists. Done this to guiet hunting strings

I have used Goo Gone numerous times in the past several weeks. It does an excellent job taking off grime and wax from the actual bow limbs, along with adhesive residue from risers etc. I have not used it on a string as I usually put a new string on the bow. Goo Gone works well.
