Are these cool?
« on: July 28, 2010, 12:48:00 PM »
I picked up some pretty neat arrows today, the guy also has a older Kodiak special he is 73 and he said that he bought it when he was 16 I'm thinking 63? it has a leather grip and it's 53# I think 60", I told him several times if he ever wants to sell it I'll buy it. It looks like a shooter to me.

I'm thinking if he is 73 and bought them when he was 16 that would make them  1953.

The Shakespeare wooden arrows are "OK", but those Herters Farbenglas arrows are absolutely
G R E A T ! !

I didn't do the math but those are definitely no 1953 arrows.  1963 is more like it

63 is what I'm thinking the bow is.

I believe the Leather grip was dropped on the Kodiak Special before 1960. I'm thinking the first Specials were offered around 1955. Sorry, I checked my math and none of the dates, ages and years seem to add up to 1963 for some reason. Let me go re-figure.

My math doesn't add up to that, His thinking he was 16 when he bought it maybe off. But in any case it's a nice looking older Bear. Are they all good shooters in that vintage, are there problem years?

That would put the bow at a 1953(he was born in 1937+16=1953) What does the Kodiak look like? wide limb or skinny? If it looks good it should be a shooter. The only ones I know of that should not be shot due to "bad years" are the ones with the aluminum lamination in them.

It has a look similar to the pics of a 55 or 56 that I did a search on. Like a dummy I didn't get the ser # I did look at it but don't remember what the heck it was. Next time I see it I'll remember.

The arrows do look very cool by the way. What is the story behind the man?

Stone Knife,
To my knowledge the serial number won't tell the year during that time period.

Two Tracks,

I don't believe Bear made a Kodiak Special before 1955.

What is the story behind the man?
This guy is always coming out and talking to us when we are working by his place, he's a nice person and likes to fish and hunted at one time but said he's too old to bow hunt anymore. One day when my son and I were at the gas station putting gas in the boat so we could go bowfishing, he came up and asked if we were going fishing. i told him we were going bowfishing then showed him my 70's Grizzly, he then told me he use to bowfish and hunt deer with his old Bear Kodiak Special. That's what led up to a conversation about his arrows, he asked if I would be interested in them because they are just sitting there and he wants to see them get used. Now I'm hoping to get the bow from him, if I do I'm going to put it and those arrows to good use in the deer woods.

Stoneknife, Thanks for the update. It sounds like the gentlman would love to see his old gear get put to good use. I bet he would love a nice slab of backstrap.

Hey Jack, I don't know the old bears near as good as I should thats for sure. I was just trying to get the math thing figured out for folks to guess from. I think it is a sweet 53# 1957 Kodiak Special that shoots like a rocket. I can't wait to see the pics.
