Removing Finish on Browning
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:35:00 AM »
I have a few Browning bows that need refinishing. One is an early Explorer and the other a Backpacker II. Both of these have a very thick heavy clear finish and would take forever to sand through. Does anyone know what finish was used on Brownings. What is best method to remove it? Is there a stripper that won't harm Glass but will remove finish?
I have removed finishes on other bows with a scraper and sparingly using acetone or stripper with good results but this thick finish seems a bit tougher. Thanks, Magwah

I refinished a Nomad Stalker and removed the old finish with sandpaper and elbow grease.  I also have a Safari that I've started removing the finish the same way, but got distracted by another project.

I don't know what Browning used for the finish, but it didn't seem any harder to remove than any of the other bows that I've stripped.

Acetone will work on about anything including the fiberglass-be careful. Sanding is the safest.

I have in past used scrapers and solvent with good results (on most finishes) but the finish on these two bows is very thick and is very hard and brittle might be epoxy(not like most) and I thought there might be a tried and true way that works especially good on Brownings thick finish. When you use sanding method how do you keep from sanding away the glass itself?
